Seasons and a dense question

Morning

We have an entire 6 year old dog but not find ourselves with a little terrier bitch in the house belonging to my daughter. She’s 5 months old and daughter has spoken to vet about early spay but I’m not sure. I’m waiting to discuss chemical castrations but concerned she will come into season at 6 months. Any tips on early signs etc, will he know well before us?

He'll know before you.

But the first few days of the season the bitch is unreceptive, so you'll get a little while when he starts going nuts but a mating is very unlikely. That said, it'll be hell to live with and stressful for both.

So I think the best preparation is to find someone now who will take one of the dogs for 3 weeks or so at the first sign. It might be easier to find someone who will take on your older, presumably calmer and better trained dog, rather than a mardy hormonal pup who will be spotting blood.

A friend has a neutered male and has to move him out when her bitch comes in to season. Not because of unwanted pregnancy but because it's too stressful for the dogs.

Separate households is by far the best solution.

But there's nothing wrong with spaying a small breed when still young (they hit puberty earlier). Your DD needs to talk to her vet about when

You come sometimes tell a bitch is coming into season as she'll start weeing more frequently on walks. The back end also starts to swell before the season starts.

We've had an in-season bitch and a neutered male in the house at the same time. They were usually okay except when she was in standing heat (4-5 days) when we kept them apart as much as possible.
