Puppy with dandruff and smelly wind!

Hightideattheseaside · 22/04/2021 09:23

My lab puppy has terrible smelly wind and dandruff. Apart from this she is a happy, active soul that eats well, though not quite as much as recommended. But would happily wolf down human food being true to her lab nature!

I’m thinking her food doesn’t agree with her that much? She is only 10 weeks though so I’m cautious about switching just yet and before I’ve spoken to the vet. Will be speaking to them when she gets her 2nd jabs and won’t switch before then.

Just wondered if anyone else encountered this with a puppy and if switching food helped? Thanks!

What food is she currently on? It sounds like she has an intolerance, so changing her food should help

Bluebird2021 · 22/04/2021 10:44

Our lab puppy has Naren the same

Dandruff.... when is it occurring? Is it actually dandruff as ours occurs after a walk, activity.

Wind.... maybe not the actual food. What treats do you give? We find certain ones give wind as does humans ‘sausage’

Bluebird2021 · 22/04/2021 10:44

Naren? Not sure what that was!

Hightideattheseaside · 22/04/2021 11:54

She only has her food for treats at the moment. She’s on Harrington’s large breed puppy dry food.

She seems to just have dandruff all the time. As she is black it really stands out. She scratches and bites at herself but not obsessively and no sore patches. Skin under fur look normal.

I’m a bit overwhelmed at the choice of food out there. No idea what to switch her too!

Our lab puppy had dandruff when he arrived and for a few weeks after. We slowly transitioned from Dr John's (from the breeder) to Eden (which is much better nutritionally) and it cleared up straight away. He's now 1 and has a beautiful glossy coat.

Harringtons isn't a great food if I'm honest! The best website to work out the best for them and your budget is allaboutdogfood!

I use Eden on our one kibble fed dog and it's worked out great for him, he has the fish cuisine because of his intolerances

sunflowersandbuttercups · 23/04/2021 17:28

What flavour food is she eating?

Harringtons isn't amazing but it's not awful either - for a brand found on supermarket shelves it's decent.

But it could be that she's allergic to the protein in the food - chicken is a common allergen, for example, so you could try switching to the salmon and potato flavoured food before switching brands completely.

Hightideattheseaside · 23/04/2021 17:39

Thanks for the replies. I didn’t think of a chicken allergy I was thinking along the lines of grain intolerance. How common is a chicken allergy? I got the impression grain intolerance was pretty common.

I’d like to switch her to Eden’s as that gets a good nutrition rating on allaboutdogfood but I emailed them and she can’t have it until 14 weeks. So it could be worth switching flavours and holding out another month.

It's one of the most common allergens that exist.

I would switch the protein in the food. Harringtons do a salmon and potato flavoured kibble.

My pup had IBS, he was on Arden Grange which the breeder covered in chicken noodle soup when I had him Confused but I changed to James Wellbeloved. “Reputable” breeder too. Hmm He was itchy, but he’s blonde so not AS noticeable dandruff wise.
When you change the food, mix the old food with some of the new slowly, to avoid any tummy upsets.
