Anyone had one? I'm really interested to hear what they're like - good family pets? Any issues? I've heard they can suffer with separation anxiety but not sure if that's a breed thing or down to the individual.

My mum has had two (one at a time) and found them to be a lovely bread. Great with kids, very gentle, no problems at all. Only thing is grooming.

I'm biased as I have 3...

I'd say they are great dogs and I wouldn't change mine for anything.

The breed was sold to me by someone who described them as a dog with a sense of humour.

Undoubtedly, they do have big personalities and you will be owned by your dog.
They do thrive on human company and definitely want to be in the middle of all the family activities. So, although you can leave them for a limited time they will look for their own entertainment if they feel its been too long...
Mine are fun for the kids, they seem to put up with most things but will let me know when they have had enough.
Like with any dog, the more time you spend on training and socialising the more you'll get from your dog.
To me, they have everything that people are looking for in Spaniel x Poodle, minus the prey drive & high energy. They are intelligent, quite easy to train, non aggressive. My adults are calm and happy with a quick walk around the block or a 3 hour hike whatever time & weather allows us to do. (Although one hates walks and quite frankly trotts behind like an old lady- she is 3!!) The others are playful and friendly but still prefer the sofa over a day hillwalking.
But be wary of the puppy stage, they are nippy and challenging so good support through training classes/ dog trainer for the first 12 months is a must in my eyes.

My advice is to read up on them, talk to breeders know what the breed was established for guard / utility dog and see if its what you want.

That's really useful, thank you.

@Ylvamoon Do yours bark loads?

@Nix32 - ahmm yep they do like the sound of their voice and usually have a lot to say!
(Keeping in mind that I have 3 and it's a competition of who can talk the most!!)
But in all fairness, they usually bark when someone is at the door... or just in our driveway.

They also "talk" to us as in joining in the conversation!

That's why I said read up on the breed. Their traits & purpose - "jobs" that they were selected for.
They are a kind of guard dog, they are ment to alert you of strangers approaching... and send in their big cousin the Tibetan Mastiff to do the dirty work if needed!
They have a deep bark in comparison to their size. But deep down, despite the barking, they love people!
