Dog howling after being with a bitxh on heat.

Went to the dog park today as we do every day. My 2 year old Lab is very sociable and there's a group of dogs that always play together. Today he was obsessed with another Lab and after 10 mins the owner said oh she's on heat!
I put my dog on his lead and went home.
Ever since then he's been restless and tonight after we put him to bed he starts howling and pacing the floor! Is it because he's horny!? I can't cope with this all night every night!
His neutering was cancelled

Dogs are not like humans, they don't have any self control. If a bitch is on heat, a male dog will want to shag her. The owner of the hitch is being a bit irresponsible by bringing her to a doggy meet up.
Get your dog neutered as soon as possible.
Yes, once male dogs have the scent of a bitch on heat, they're not happy if they can't shag her.

WhatNowFrantic · 07/04/2021 01:00

Sorry it sent too soon. His neutering has been cancelled twice during lockdown.
He has come across bitches on Hest before and I've taken him away and not had this reaction. Why now? I'm just interested to know. Poor boy!

It's just biology. The other owner is incredibly irresponsible and put their bitch in a very dangerous situation too.

Vets are neutering though so if you can't get in at your usual practise I would ring round to ask.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 07/04/2021 08:00

At two, he's reached or is just reaching social maturity (which is one reason IMHO why it's a good idea to hold off neutering until then). As a result, his reactions to various things will change - he might be a bit more assertive, for example.

The bitch's owner was being unreasonable. When mine's in season, she is hustled off to empty fields and away from other dogs ASAP. It's not fair on any of the dogs otherwise, even if you're pretty sure that the bitch is not yet ready to stand and accept a mating.

Intact male dogs are very hormone driven. Yours will calm down again, though.

DartmoorDoughnut · 07/04/2021 08:04

She was probably more into the right time of her heat so he’s been more impacted by it

MaryLennoxsScowl · 07/04/2021 08:52

He’s older and more sexually mature than last time. Mine did this too - had met a few bitches in heat (on leads and not allowed to play) and was interested but not too bothered once you took him away, though would follow them if allowed, and then one day he just went mad when he smelled a bitch and I could barely drag him away and he lay by the door panting and jumped up at the windows asking to go back out again, and his recall vanished and next time we went out he ran off to look for her! He got booked in for neutering that week. It’s not safe to them - he’d have gone straight across a road if she’d been on the other side. The vet was closed for COVID but was doing neutering appointments.

Thanks for all your comments.
I took him to the park this morning, the same bitch was just leaving. My dog spent the whole hour, nose to the ground frantically sniffing. I took some best ham and he wasn't even interested in it! I then took him on a sniffy road walk and he calmed down, he's now asleep on the sofa.
I've just phoned the vet, they can't fit him in until the end of May😩

Can you try other practises in the area? You don't have to stick at the same place all the time - if they don't have space for eight weeks and you want him doing, don't feel bad about going elsewhere.

thenewduchessofhastings · 07/04/2021 11:09

It's very irresponsible for people to take their bitches in heat out quick frankly;it only takes one very determined intact male and boom once they are in a lock you can't pull them apart as you could cause serious damage to both dogs.

We fostered a intact bitch and when she came into heat omg our intact male went insane;they were kennelled separately so no chance of him getting at her but the noises he was making;he sounded like he was dying;he was carted off for a few days to our friends boarding kennels as we actually wanted some sleep but he still took 24 hours to calm down when he arrived at the kennels.Coincidentally both he and the bitch were the same breed.

WhatNowFrantic · 07/04/2021 11:22

Can I get him done at another vet then? I just assumed we had to stay with "our" vet

OP posts:
Honeyroar · 07/04/2021 11:25

Yes you can be registered at different practices.

Honeyroar · 07/04/2021 11:26

Perhaps walk him somewhere different for a week or so too!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 07/04/2021 11:31

Before she was spayed it was a nightmare taking dog for walk when on heat. Went early morning and late at night as less chance of bumping into other dogs taking their owners for a walk.
Male dogs would be coming from nowhere dragging their poor owners. Walking past houses and dog going mental. Very stressful not just for me but her also .
All I could do was apologise. I did my best to stay away from the dog park.
She's now been done and still occasionally gets a horny male sniffing her arse but as I seem to have the only lesbian dog in the village she puts them in their place.
No you don't need to use your own vet. Ring around until you find a vet who will do the op

WhatNowFrantic · 07/04/2021 11:54

Thanks I might try another vet. It does make me cross that they continue to take the bitch to the park, they even admit she's on heat yet let her run around off leash🙄

How do you stop people from doing it though? Any fine would be more than offset by the money they'd make from selling the puppies if/when their pet "accidentally" becomes pregnant.
Branleuse · 07/04/2021 12:16

yeah you can use a different vet practice, thats completely normal, especially if they have a long wait for something, its no problem to shop around

WhatNowFrantic · 07/04/2021 22:51

So last night he slept in our bedroom as he was howling so much and I didn't want to wake the street!
Put him to bed tonight (he sleeps in the utility room downstairs) and he settled for a while then started howling again! I didn't go to him (sorry neighbours!) And he seems to have settled again. I have a camera on him.
Interestingly he also howled for a bit when I shut him in to go food shopping today.
He used to being in there alone for 3 hours x 3 times a week when I work so it's not new to him.
I'm baffled

Happytentoes · 08/04/2021 07:37

Poor lovesick romeo-dog. My dog did that pre-neutering. The bitch in question lived close by.
He calmed down once her season was past and it was probably about 1 week of her season that he was restless.
He was still too young to be neutered but he only had that reaction that one time. I guess it was proximity that wound him up.

WhatNowFrantic · 08/04/2021 10:38

I feel so sad for him! I took him to the park this morning and the dog on heat arrived at the same time, I lost control of my dog and he ran off complete with lead. The owner of the bitch took her home but my dog was still frantic so I took him on a road walk.
We are done with the park for a few weeks!
I've tried 3 other vets and nobody can neuter him until late May😒

OP posts:
sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/04/2021 11:26

I would get him booked in somewhere and then ask the practise(s) to contact you if they have any cancellations or spots open up that you can take advantage of.

The owner of the bitch is being HIGHLY irresponsible and putting their dog in a dangerous situation - unless they're doing it on purpose and trying to get them pregnant? Hmm

Stellaris22 · 08/04/2021 12:46

Has anyone mentioned to the owner of the bitch in heat that it's irresponsible and dangerous to be walking their dog as normal? It can cause fights amongst the males.

BigHairyPaws · 08/04/2021 12:57

Late May doesn't seem like such a long time to wait, tbh. I'd be booking for then and avoiding the park for the next 5-6 weeks while I waited.

I suspect they're hoping she falls pregnant Hmm
WhatNowFrantic · 08/04/2021 16:34

The vet won't let me book him in until after 20th april as their diary doesnt start until then🤷‍♀️
I've known the owner of the bitch from seeing her regularly in the dog park, she's very blasé about it all, she's had dogs all her life and Currently has 2 bitches.
I'm hoping after this mornings palaver that she sees sense! Maybe she does want puppies but she's going the wrong way about it.
