When did your house go back to normal after puppy days

We have a 7 nearly 8 month old pup. Our house is puppy proofed downstairs. He's pretty good but still chews wires when he can get hold of them, will chew plants (have moved them all) , have taken up rugs or he would chew and he will destroy any dog bed, Can I have hope I can reassemble my house at some point? And when is that likely to be?

Around 1 year of age but some things remained. He is 5 this year and we still have baby gates.

It varied with the puppies. The current one is almost a year old and we still don't trust her near books and houseplants.

I can't remember exactly when we got 100% back to normal with the previous one, but certainly by the time she turned two.

When our dog was about 2

PeckyOwl · 05/04/2021 18:24

11 months old and I've just got rid of the pen and put the rugs back.

Profiterolegirl · 05/04/2021 18:49

4 or 5 months.

About 12 months of age, but like PP we still have a baby gate up.

Our downstairs is open plan and I don't trust him unsupervised in the kitchen as he could easily get into the food cupboards!

He's allowed unsupervised everywhere else, though. He's three now.

18 months before our lab stopped eating the house during the night or if let alone

First dog - about 6 weeks after we got her
Second dog - still in a crate at night and when we go out aged 18 months
Same breed, same training, different species mentally

Girlintheframe · 06/04/2021 06:42

About 1. That's when we stopped using the crate and got a bed instead. The baby gate remained on the stairs for about another year though we moved it to the top of the stairs instead of at the bottom.

After about a year, but there wasn't a defining moment - just a gradual relaxation when we realised he wasn't chewing things any more.

I had a definite moment of needing the house back. It came as we were getting ready for Christmas so our dog was 15 months old. Everything went and pup had run of the house. He was fantastic and actually far better behaved because he wasn't being shut behind gates. He stopped chasing the cats as the novelty had worn off and didn't chew anything that wasn't his. He does still like to steal socks and prance around with them until you chase him for them but we all love that game!

When pup was about 18mths we got rid of the crate and stopped using a baby gate on the kitchen. He has free run of downstairs 24hrs a day. We have never allowed dogs upstairs so the gate to the hallway and stairs remains.
