I've always wanted a Golden Retriever some day. Talk some sense into me!

A couple of years ago we moved to the countryside and since then I've been surrounded by Goldens on all sides! I reckon there's 3 within 200 yards of the house.

So that's brought my childhood passion for them flooding up again! I keep fantasising about getting one in 2 or 3 years time.....

Tell me it's crazy though. I need some sense kicked into me.

We live in the countryside surrounded by sheep and cows, but our walls are very low and are traditional piled stone. In other words, not too easy to raise and what height would they even have to be anyway?

We don't have a gate at the moment (literally no need) and would have to get one - but the gatepost are only 4 foot high! (and the walls are even lower).

So that's a problem. One of the neighbours has installed a dog run to keep her Golden in but she still has much higher walls. I think it's more to contain the dog in the garden when they go out on errands. In other words the dog has the full use of the garden when they're at home. But surely our walls are too low for free range?

On the plus side one of us is at home all the time, but on the downside we have kids who are still fairly young. I don't even know what age we would have to wait until. 8/10?

Oh and whilst we have a big house, Goldens are really big. Where would it even sleep?? Our utility is too narrow and that just leaves the playroom really.

On the plus side we're both good walkers but we used to have a JRT that needed an hour twice a day and tbh it half killed us. I don't know if we'd have the energy for that going into our 50s tbh. At the moment we each would do about 5/6km a day but that's all. I honestly don't think we could do more. There's a Goldie owner up the road who seems to be forever walking the dog, every time you look out!

Are these dealbreakers? Give me a kick up the bum and tell me we'd be better off with a toy breed!

I love Golden Retrievers! What a gorgeous breed. I actually think you could make it work 😃

PuppyMonkey · 04/04/2021 12:55

Two big walks a day the absolute minimum requirement. More would be better.

They slobber a lot. They malt everywhere. They are mud magnets. You need to hose them down all the time in winter. Quite stinky.

They’re crazy and annoying as puppies. They’d be over your low wall first chance. Then they’d go off with the first person they met as they adore everyone.

They are big and lumbering and will knock your kids over.

Very bitey as puppies. Painfully so. Plus they think it’s funny to attack you comedy style in play. Not funny.

Mine has a surprisingly delicate stomach. If I don’t buy him really expensive food, he has horrendous runs and appalling farts.

Careful on walks, they are strong dogs who’ll have your arm off.

On the other hand Grin

Wow, you make them sound kinda dreadful!

That's a shame. Sad But what I was asking for.

You did see the pic I posted though?

Elieza · 04/04/2021 15:01

How could anyone not love that golden fluffy face Grin

Ilikewinter · 04/04/2021 15:01

Our neighbour used to have one, he was absolutely gorgeous, it took her ages to get him out the street cause he had to say hello to everyone he met and she had no hope if the kids were out playing!
She took him out on several shorter walks a day, sadly hes in doggy heaven now.
Id go for it!

Stirmecrazy · 04/04/2021 15:18

We’ve got one gorgeous but very big and hairy. No idea of spacial awareness so always banging into you , knocking things off coffee tables, trampling cats. Ours Unfortunately has arthritis which is popular in this breed and at almost 10 can no longer do long walks so little and often for ours . Still loves water though and will be in any puddle , stream or river it can find. And then takes hours to dry!
Also the hair is off the scale, have to Hoover daily .
We love her dearly but would I get another one? Not sure . We are heading to our 60’s now and she is a big breed and can pull you over if she wants to so not sure if I would risk it now but we have loved having her and she has given us a lot of happiness

JulesM73 · 04/04/2021 15:22

You can’t go far without people stopping to say hello to the golden who takes himself for a walk...

ElspethFlashman · 04/04/2021 15:25

It's the face that's the problem! Every one in my neighbourhood pads up to me and smiles from ear to ear and I melt. 😭

I don't really care about the hair tbh or the slobber, or the mud.

But I really can't get a dog that needs 10 km a day, I just know my limitations.

My boy has never been one for walking that far, from when he was small he would have been fine with a couple of 45 minute walks each day.

IrmaFayLear · 04/04/2021 17:13

Where would he sleep? Well, with you, of course!!!

My lovely gr slept down beside the bed. Dh would leave for work at 5.45am and at 5.46 I’d have a hairy companion snoring next to me in the bed....

IrmaFayLear · 04/04/2021 17:16

I agree that grs are very strong and although they are the absolute best, their puppyhood is long (lifelong?!) and they can be very wilful dogs.

BeStrongAndCourageous · 04/04/2021 17:21

I'd love a golden. They'd be far too big for our little house though, even if DH wanted a dog, which he doesn't

Tal45 · 04/04/2021 17:27

Oh god I love them too, couldn't cope with one but wish I could x

ElspethFlashman · 04/04/2021 18:57

Definitely not on the bed! Too hot!

I always thought they were super chilled dogs, was I very very wrong?

RandomMess · 04/04/2021 18:59

Get a golden oldie and have a dog Walker?

JulesM73 · 04/04/2021 19:00

It’s like all dogs it just depends, mine is super super chilled, not much gets him too worked up other than food!

When he was young he was a puller on walks, managed to pull me off my feet once and I ended up in hospital (not his fault) but once he got to about 18 months this was gone and now he’s brilliant. Sleeps, likes cuddles, eats and wants to be where you are. He is also just as happy if left on his own for a few hours and will just sleep (nest camera verifies this).

Druidlookingidiot · 04/04/2021 19:02

My boys grew up with our Golden Retriever, she was a dog in a million. I still have a place in my heart for another Goldie but they are very hairy, they shed like crazy, they get wet and muddy at every opportunity, and ours was a stomach on legs. When she was young, she was a terrible food thief. She stole food from the work top, she could open the fridge, she once came back with a sandwich she'd stolen from a picnic and she raided the kitchen bin whenever she could. I hope that helps. Grin

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2021 19:03

Love them there’s one in our dog walk park that gets so much attention

There’s so many breeds and he’s my favourite

Elieza · 04/04/2021 19:04

Why are there only two lovely dog pics on here? Surely there should be many more!

A disappointing haul! Easter Grin

TippledPink · 04/04/2021 19:06

My sister had a Golden retriever- it was really snappy, but my son once. Was very grumpy and no one could go near it, you had to wait for him to approach you. He was also really slobbery, which is disgusting!

namechanged984630 · 04/04/2021 19:10

I had all the same kinds of reservations as you, got one and don't regret it at all!

PoTheDog · 04/04/2021 19:12

Like lots breeds, you get working lines and show lines. Show lines tend to be much more chilled, relaxed and need less exercise.

Mine is a guide dog puppy reject, so a super chilled out line. He's on my feet fast asleep as we speak and will be for the next few hours. He gets about 45mins twice a day and a bit of play when he feels like it. He is a complete velcro dog though and prefers human company to other dogs. He couldn't cope in a household where everyone was out at work all day

STARmyarse · 04/04/2021 19:13

I love golden retrievers soooo much I’d consider swapping one of my kids for one.
