for your small on lead dog?

Had this happen yesterday and interested to know how other people would have handled it?

The big dog had zero recall, owners were far away and it was running straight towards my (already nervous) dog with its head down.

This happened to me 2 days ago. My dog is a largish shih poo. Staffy long legged type dog comes running at us in local
Kids park (my dog on lead) and basically attacks my dog immediately. I didn’t know what to do. Panicked, screamed my head off, owner ran over but couldn’t get dog off my dog. I fell over (shit Ugg’s) and was kicking the dogs back legs while the owner was trying to tear him off my dog - who was swinging in the the air at one point. Luckily the dog had bitten my dogs harness (also my dog has crazy double matted coat at the minute so that may have helped) but I didn’t know this till the owner had dragged him off. It was horrific, I burst into tears straight afterwards and felt awful that I hadn’t protected him better. The owners were sorry but it had obviously happened before. I am obviously not that great in a dog crisis.....might bring a stick in future though I think that dog might have needed a baseball bat

Little wooden kebab skewers you get with some fresh meats will be good for this situation. Sound like a whack with a stick would not have been enough based on your description of events but a sharp skewer in the neck might have made it retreat. Small enough to carry in your pocket too.
