I’m getting a puppy! I have questions......

And I’m not sure what I have forgotten.

I’ve never had a baby pup before - only older 4/6 month ones.

Got
Crate if needed
Bed
Bed with other dogs in
Bowl
Toys
Vet lined up
Puppy pads
Mop

Need
Board for bottom of gate
Insurance - I’m on it.

Food

Current dogs are on raw (home made not pre-made). Will swap her over slowly but is there a puppy type calculator anywhere? Or is it better to order raw puppy from somewhere until she is fully grown and I can do what the others have?

You need chews! Antlers are good. Some kind of car transportation option. And rug doctor urine eliminator for accidents- gets rid of the smell so they don't keep weeing in the same spot
Possibly some training treats
Plastic free poo bags

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/04/2021 17:23

Collar and tag - we have brass slide tags that don't fall off. Also a lead as the first walk comes round quite fast and it doesn't hurt to habituate the puppy to the lead beforehand.

Happytentoes · 01/04/2021 17:25

Collar
Training lead
I.D. Tag
Harness?
Stair gate? I bought one especially for pets as it’s a lot higher than kids ones and my dog was/ is a great jumper.

Happytentoes · 01/04/2021 17:25

X post!

PatientGrisel · 01/04/2021 17:28

Been to get hay for the Guineas. Bought collar and lead and a yak chew. Wasn’t sure about harness as no idea how big she’ll be by the time she goes for an actual walk so I’ll get that later when we can try it on her.

Stair gate in the attic. Will send himself up to get it with the crate. Got a long lead somewhere.

ID tag on the list.

Enzyme cleaner!

I went through a bottle of it when ours was a pup.

DinosaurDiana · 02/04/2021 07:25

Get rid of the puppy pads.
As soon as pup is home the FIRST thing you do is put it in the garden and it stays there until it wees. Then next time you take it out (about 30 mins later) you take it to that same spot and encourage sniffing so it wees outside again. And repeat.
Don’t forget to set your alarm to take it out in the garden a couple of times in the night.

picklemewalnuts · 02/04/2021 07:47

Raw shouldn't need a particularly slow swap with a puppy- it's up to you though. Just introduce One protein at a time. And it's 3% of adult weight as a starting point, so it will look like a lot for such a little thing. And split up over the day, of course. Is it a rescue/mongrel, or do you know about the parents? Just thinking about the likely end size!

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 02/04/2021 09:45

I wouldn't use puppy pads if I were you.

BBOA · 02/04/2021 09:50

Definitely harness......depends on breed which type though.
As above
Poo bags - biodegradable
Training treats
Dog bed
Puppy shampoo
Register with local vet?Healthy pet club?Includes flea/worming/claws/ vet checks/ inoculation

Ladymouse · 02/04/2021 10:06

Agree with no puppy pads.
Loads of chew toys (will save your furniture)
Flea and worm treatment if your putting them in the garden to toilet/play.
Also take a blanket when picking your puppy up to rub all over mum and siblings. If you leave this in the crate it will make your puppy more settled to go in there. It would be even better if you could drop it too the breeder to leave in the puppies bed.

PatientGrisel · 02/04/2021 17:18

Is the idea of no puppy pads is thatis just encourages them to pee indoors? I’d much rather keep taking her out every half hour.
Will check with Vets re puppy club or just arrange the right wormer, flea stuff. Ive got a good list from breeder what they’ve had and when. Current vet is fabulous so i have no worries there. Will take her for a check once she’s home.
Got poo bags (current dogs)
She’ll have a blanket to come home with for her bed.

Info re food is good. Final size will be around 7kg. I’ll read up more and plan that. Can’t decide if while she’’s little I’ll get frozen stuff delivered or mince my own. Probs a mix depending how organised I’m being.

picklemewalnuts · 02/04/2021 22:31

Really she should eat it without it being minced. It will keep her teeth cleaner.

Chocolateismakingmefat · 02/04/2021 22:35

Very soft blanket... Dpuppy is 16 months and still seeks hers out and rubs her face into it like she did on that first day...
Takes 10 mins in the drier after a wash so she just about always has it.
She needs 2 now @25 kg!!
Grin

PatientGrisel · 03/04/2021 08:31

Pickle me - I meant mincing while she’s a baby. The others just get whole. Much less faff.
Mincing whole chickens is very satisfying though (had to do it after old dog had mouth surgery). I pretend I’m a serial killer.

Next question.

Beds.

Do I get her a little puppy sized soft one for now? I’m thinking if she needs crating at any point (like if left alone to go to Tesco - and the rare occasions there isn’t a human in the house) she’ll need to have a space for emergency wees. And she’ll be lost in a big sturdy adult sized one.

Vet bed is best because they can't destroy it
I got a soft bed and my puppy ate it and humped it Grin
