Dog ate raisin cake. Hand hold?

My 11 month old just stole a piece of cake off a plate. Got some off him but he definitely ate some and there were raisins in it. He's at the vet now. Took him within 20 minutes of him eating it and vet nurse seemed very non plussed. She said they were treating a dog who'd eaten a whole chocolate cake too so I'm hopeful but scared. First time at my mum's for a year. Typical this happens. She feels awful. DH sighing that this sort of thing always happens at "your bloody mother's ". I want my baby back. Oh and DS is upset too. Worrying. He'll be ok won't he?

My bastard Lab ate an entire Christmas cake that I had left on the side to cool after taking it out of the oven. He was as right as bloody rain. Fingers crossed yours will be OK too.

(I loved him really)

Iwantmychairback · 31/03/2021 15:06

Hope he’s ok. Vets will sort him out.
Just to let you know, my last dog (Labrador) and his Jack Russell friend stole and ate a full fruit cake meant for a Christening and they were both fine.

Easterbunnyishoppingmad · 31/03/2021 15:07

Our dpuppy ate 5 mince pies at Xmas. Totally fine.

MrsBDarcy · 31/03/2021 15:08

He's only a little terrier so I hope so too. My friend's lab ate a whole box of celebrations and was fine. Mind you they're hardly great quality chocolates these days. She vomited them up including wrappers

My dog ( who has renal disease) ate a life size chocolate wizards hat recently, he was fine. I’m sure a handful of raisins will be ok 👍

Hemlock2013 · 31/03/2021 15:11

My little terrier ate Christmas cake too, was absolutely fine. I didn’t even take him to the vet tbh, (bad dog owner used to him eating all sorts) I just kept an eye and he was fine.

I’m sure it’s just a small amount of dogs who suffer ill effects from raisins... or maybe I have that wrong?...

Hand holding though x

AmelieTaylor · 31/03/2021 15:11

A million years ago, when I was a kid, my mum made fruit cake once a week. Our dog ate as much of it as we did.

She also broke into the room with Easter Eggs in it one year & ate several

Worst thing was the tin foil bits in her poop.

No one knew then that dogs apparently shouldn't eat raisins or chocolate.... I'm sure she was very pleased about that.

I'm not sure when dogs changed so much.

I'm sure your baby will be fine. Home later demanding steak for his dinner after such a draining day! X

Soubriquet · 31/03/2021 15:12

Should be ok

It’s funny how some dogs react worse than others though

I mean one dog can eat a chocolate and suffer terribly from it whilst another could scoff and entire cake and be right as rain

Dobbyafreeelf · 31/03/2021 15:15

My pup ate a box of mince pies just after Christmas. Vets gave her an injection to make her bring it up. She was fine afterwards. They said if they see them within 4hrs then they are normally fine.

Thedogissnoring · 31/03/2021 15:16

My little daxie was sick yesterday at 7am. No idea why, seemed fine in herself. Then sick again around midday. Still no idea. Then find empty cookie bag, she’s eaten a whole choc chip cookie from the bakery. She’s fine. Didn’t go to vet as I noticed 24 hours later.

My parents dog ate a Kit Kat once and didn’t bat an eyelid

MrsBDarcy · 31/03/2021 15:17

Thank you all. I'm a bit tearful now. I went full on adrenaline mode to get him to the vets before and now just keep looking at his toys☹️

Fingers crossed he'll be absolutely fine. I had the greediest rescue dog who must have been Labrador/ collie crossed with mountain goat when I think of how he managed to reach stuff he shouldn't have had. In the early days he polished off a whole Celebrations advent calendar, 10 packets of crisps in one sitting (very clever too learning how to pop them open) and made a valiant effort on a box of special toffee. He also worked his way through a packet of cream crackers - no water left in his bowl that day - as well as a box of mince pies. He'd hoover up anything he found on his walk too. Nothing disagreed with him and although we got better at keeping things out of his way, it was a life long habit. Hope your pup is equally resilient.

It's not that they've changed, it's that only some dogs react to raisins, and you never know whether yours is one of them (or not) until it's too late.

Lots of people come on these threads with stories about how their dogs have eaten Christmas cakes/muesli/raisin bars with no issues, but that's largely irrelevant really.

MrsElf · 31/03/2021 15:36

If it was just a little bit and he’s straight in to the vet his chances are good. One of my idiots undid his seatbelt and scoffed a stollen from the front seat last year, our long suffering vet was far more irritated than worried!

MrsBDarcy · 31/03/2021 15:37

My friend just messaged and said hers was ok after eating raisins and getting seen in a similar time frame so I'm hoping I've been fast enough for him to have barely appreciated the marzipan nuggets and light sponge surrounding the fruit before it's back up and out of him....

My lab ate an unknown amount of chocolate covered raisins when the bag split & they went everywhere! Dd panicked, ran to find me & when I got there she (ddog) was looking guilty!

She was ill for nearly a week, sick, diarrhoea, wobbly & it was extremely difficult the get the medication into her to sort her stomach out. It was pretty horrible but she's fine now.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 31/03/2021 15:46

Not advocating dogs eating raisins or anything other toxic food. But, for context, my dog got into the food recycling caddy and was chomping through manky rotten food scraps and was fine. Poop scooping the next day was grim, but other than that...

It's a good job she's cute, because her habits are repellent...

Seeleyboo · 31/03/2021 15:48

My little shit of a chihuahua ate a mice pie laden with alcohol. She was fine. Looked hungover and greasy for a few days.

My friends dog drank a glass of Baileys once

Ironically he was also called Bailey.

He was drunk and then hungover the next day but made a full recovery Grin

wandawombat · 31/03/2021 15:56

If you got him to the vet asap, they'll make him sick. Maybe give him charcoal too.

Mine came across sausages and biscuits out on a walk. It looked well suss, so I got them straight over to the vet, then watched them all throw up!

justwaydamin · 31/03/2021 15:57

Your DH sounds a bit mean tbh Sad

butterry · 31/03/2021 16:28

Don't worry, he will be fine but maybe a bit groggy and sorry for himself after he's made to vomit. My dad fed our pup a bit of raisin bread thinking it would be extra tasty for him! He had no idea that they were poisonous to dogs. We were at the vets within 30 mins and he was fine but grumpy afterwards. Having a perfectly nice time chomping away then whisked off to the vet to throw up does throw a damper on things!

HappyThursdays · 31/03/2021 16:42

hope he's ok

my spaniel has a penchant for hot cross buns - luckily for us, he didn't bother to chew the last one he stole so the vet got it up whole. Hopefully yours has the same outcome - apparently naughty stealing dogs often don't chew the food which helps if it's poisonous to them! Fingers crossed, it's horrible waiting to see how they are

Quit4me · 31/03/2021 17:16

Not a dog owner so this is all strange talk to me?
How can dogs eat other dogs and cats poo quite merrily but not raisins?

Whaleandsnail6 · 31/03/2021 17:58

My old dog ate a slice of fruit loaf. Took her straight to the vet who gave her medicines to make her vomit. She was absolutely fine after her stomach was empty... The worse part for her was then not having her tea to let her stomach settle! She was home the same night and right as rain. She didn't learn, was a nightmare for food stealing but I was more cautious after that
