Hi

Pup cut her pawpad Wednesday evening. I checked with the vet thursday morning when I was down with another issues and she Said just to keep her from licking it. I have been salt bathing it and putting savlon on and keeping her away from it however it doesn't look much better. I have a vet appointments tomorrow but does anyone know the treatment for it? Ive read conflicting things for stitching it etc and not sure if there will be much they can do? I have tried to get a photo but it is hard to get a proper capture of it!

Any advice/reassurance would be appreciated!

Manuka honey is good for cut paws. You can get it in supermarkets and health food shops.

I'm surprised vet didn't do more when you saw her/him on Wednesday. I'd expect it to need stitching.

Qwertyyui · 28/03/2021 13:41

@fudgeflake she didn't actually see it as I was there to put down our 2 rats who were poorly but asked in passing and to be honest I was heartbroken about our little ladies so possibly not as focused as I should have been. She seemed like it wasn't a big deal having a cut and just said keep her from licking it.

I can see another large vet bill coming my way. Possibly might need to claim on her insurance. If I can go 6 months without spending hundreds in the vets I will be a happy girl!

That needs a stitch by the looks of it, salt water baths in the meantime.

She has been really good letting me look at it and clean it and giving me kisses even though she obviously wants me off it but my anxiety is through the roof. I wish I had just taken her back to the vets on friday/Saturday but she wasnt limping and we were keeping it covered and she is on house arrest (and is not impressed by it)

Thank you everyone. Honestly they are sent to test your nerves!

If it is a stitch will she need another general anesthetic?

Have you got anything you could bandage it with to stop the dirt getting in? We've had dramatic cut pads here, and after we've cleaned and disinfected them (hibiscrub is good) use a non-adhesive pad over the actual wound to cushion it, a wrap of cotton wool bandage (I'm sure it has a proper name), then lint, then vetwrap.

It's amazing how quickly gruesome paw pad injuries heal, provided they don't get infected.

We have had a lot of cut paw pads. Some just needed keeping clean and dry for a couple of weeks but one required a staple from the vets.

I have kept it covered with a kids sock and bobble which has worked so far. She doesn't touch it so does work but I can probably bandage it up as we have a first aid kit to hand. I was just not sure if it needs air to heal or not!

Pets at home do a bottle of antiseptic lotion. Purple bottle. Miracle stuff ime..
Our dhusky had a hole on her back from itching on a fence post. Typical no vet open in a Friday evening!! Had scabbed over by the Monday... Its £6.

Ah I will get some of that then! We tried an inflatable collar from there to put her off it but it was a pile of tosh and so now she just knows she will get told no if she even looks at it! x

Vets have checked it and she is booked in tomorrow to get it stitched under GA. Luckily my insurance excess is on 75 and it was be a good few hundred otherwise! He said the way it is it would be a long process to heal naturally. Just really wish I had just booked her in sooner and not listened to the first vet to just not let her lick it!

Thanks for everyones advice x
