Anyone got one? Cocker sized dog. We are about to get new back door and could have a dog flap. Can you get ones that have cat flaps too? What do you do when yo7 wan5 one in and one out. Or do you have side by side?

I have a dog flap for my staffie cross. It's great! He can wander in and out as he pleases. My back garden is completely secure with no rear access so I know he's safe outside.

A dog flap is just a big cat flap. My cat uses the dog flap just fine.

We have had problems in the past with a younger fitter version of our old cat coming in...so have a microchip cat flap...just trying to work out the options....

We were going to get one for Ddog who was always on the wrong side of the door.

However there was then a newspaper report of a failed burglary attempt caught on cctv. Little dog went out to investigate and was stolen. So that was that.

We had a flap for our cocker at our old house, the cat just used the same flap.

In my experience most cats won't 'flap in' to a place with a strange dog.

We only have a cat flap now, and we've had to set it to in only because otherwise our younger dog sticks her head out of it and barks when we're not home!

I hadn’t thought of that. It would be a brave cat to come into a house with a dog. Even though the worst thing that would happen to it is getting an undignified bum sniff and a exuberant invitation to play. Which our old cat just ignores.

We have.largr cat flap and our 2 Lhasa Apso's use it too with no problems. We put a tag on all of their collars so no strange cats and dogs can get in.

I think it depends where you live and size of dog. I had a cat flap that was microchip activated so didn't let any animal in that was not scanned into the system. Problem is they were and and out none stop and bringing dead things back in. Dogs would be different.

We have a dog flap with double-doors. Both our cats managed this successfully all their lives. It's lockable (possibly you can lock just one side so the cat can come and go but not the dog, I've never tried).

Obviously you need to think about security, but that will depend on how secure you garden is and where you live.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/03/2021 14:16

Is your garden secure enough to allow the dog to free-roam when you're not around?

MaryIsA · 27/03/2021 14:33

We probably wouldn’t be leaving her with the dog flap open. But yes it is secure.
