My poor girl has been spayed today

She looks so woebegone and feeble, my heart is just breaking for her.

I know it's the responsible thing to do but seeing her like this is making me feel SO guilty.

Any tips for helping her (and me) through this?

Oh so has mine! I had an awful time dropping her off, had a cry in the car. She was quite alert when I picked her up but since we got home she's been asleep in her crate. They'll be okay. Has yours got a cone or a surgical suit? We've got the suit but I haven't had to brave a toilet trip yet.

The worst part is over, they've come through the anaesthetic. Now just to keep them calm and still for 7-10 days... I don't know how we do it either, I've got some boredom busters, Kongs, rabbit ears, Yakker chews. Just hoping that'll be enough.

My lovely girl went through this recently. I know what you mean they seem so sad and vulnerable afterwards. It was just a case of giving lots of extra love and affection and reassurance. She bounced back fairly quickly actually Smile hope your dog feels better v.soon

ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar · 23/03/2021 19:04

It's horrible isn't it.
They do bounce back ridiculously quickly.

doodleygirl · 23/03/2021 19:09

We dont believe you unless you show us a picture of the patient Smile

MaryIsA · 23/03/2021 19:23

They do bounce back quickly. Make sure she doesn’t lick her stitches we had to put ours in a baby gro.

StillMedusa · 23/03/2021 19:35

We put one of those doggy vest suits on ours rather than a cone. She cried all night the first night and was totally spaced out and didn't eat, drink or wee, but bounced back rapidly over the next few days.

Lots of cuddles! Oh and I slept with mine for the first few nights, downstairs so she didn't have to move.

Happytentoes · 23/03/2021 20:45

When mine was done she was so woe-begone her big ‘brother’ lay down beside her.. It calmed her so much. He’s such a star.
She was fine, and looked so very cute in her blue suit.

Qwertyyui · 23/03/2021 22:08

It does get better. We got a spare suit to swap over when my husband forgot to unbutton her on a morning etc. I was on wound watch all the time and expected at day 10 to be told to wait longer as she was scabby still but got signed off. Her scar is bumpy but I think that is the internal stitch knots. The hardest part is keeping them calm! x

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 23/03/2021 23:23

Thank you all for the handhold. She's been looking miserable and was whining a little earlier. Sleeping now. So hopefully she'll be brighter tomorrow. We got her a cone but tbh, I think the babygro option is a better one. Will see how she is in the morning.

Ah my girl is booked in for the 2nd April. When the vet discussed it with my on the phone I started feeling a bit anxious! I know it’s for the best though. May I ask where people are getting the dog suits from?

RunAndTellAllOfTheAngels · 24/03/2021 00:10

I got mine on Amazon, search for surgical dog suit. I didn't realise until after that the Vet sold them too.

ashmts · 24/03/2021 00:22

Exact same as above, I got one on Amazon but it's a bit big. I mentioned this when I dropped her at the vet and they offered to fit her for one while she was there so she came home wearing one. Don't know why it never crossed my mind that the vet would have them! Think I was so anxious I was trying to be super prepared.

She's away to sleep in her crate, she's had some water, been to the toilet a couple of times, and eaten some scrambled egg. I'm sleeping on the couch to be near her but hopefully we have a quiet night.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 26/03/2021 18:56

@ashmts how's your girl getting on today?

FurrySlipperBoots · 26/03/2021 19:00

Bless her heart! I haven't had my lass done because she had issues with incontinence until she was a year old, and the vet said spaying her could cause that to return. I know the risk of mammary tumors etc is massively bigger now, which makes me feel terribly guilty, not to mention the stress she goes through when in season/having a false pregnancy - you've done the right thing! Maybe spoil her a little with some special treats over the next few days. And keep her in except for wee breaks, they always get so cold after a GA.

ashmts · 26/03/2021 19:11

@BatleyTownswomensGuild She's doing great, thanks for asking. How is yours? Mine bounced back super quick, by the next day she was more or less her normal self. Some upset tummies but apart from that no real issues. She had her wound check today at the vet and it's healing fine. She's missing her walks though, we're definitely struggling to keep her occupied.

kindlyensure · 28/03/2021 12:38

Ah - I just had my doggo done. We went for a keyhole spay so just the ovaries removed and no external wound. The next day she was bright and breezy and ready to go!

There is no scar or stitches - just a couple of what look like scratches on her belly - the ports for the keyhole instruments.

The vet gave her a surgical suit but she doesn't even look at the 'wound' so we have ditched it for now (after a forgotten-to-unbutton-it wee!).

The only downside is that because she has some internal stitches and it must be bruised inside I am mindful of keeping her calm - but she doesn't seem bothered. Vet said am able to lead walk her (away from mud) so the sniffing and picking up her pee-mails is helping to keep her busy.

We'll be good to go in a week and then she can just get on with living her best doggy life.

ashmts · 28/03/2021 14:54

@kindlyensure That's interesting, we enquired about keyhole but our vet doesn't do it. I thought the recovery would be worse with traditional but actually it sounds fairly similar. We can also lead walk her and recovery time is about 10 days so not much longer. There is a wound but it's small and not bad at all, and she's not been showing any signs of pain. Unfortunately lead walks and sniffing don't seem to tire mine out! If anything she was more hyped up after our walk, we had zoomies round the garden. She is a working breed so I was expecting this to be a nightmare. Not long to go now!

Hope all is well with you and your dog @BatleyTownswomensGuild

PhillipPhillop · 28/03/2021 15:03

Our dog has just had her 10 day check. The op was recommended by the rescue centre but I went into it unknowing what was involved and it was only when we picked her up afterwards and I read the care sheet I realised what a big op it wasBlush She was very poorly for 2 days, didn't eat or drink or even walk really. She had a collar but we took that off after a few days and she wasn't really interested in the wound only where she was shaved I think it was itchy. After a week she was bounding around and back to normal. Hope your dog is recovering by now.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 28/03/2021 15:37

Thanks for the good wishes. Wound seems to be healing fine. Trying to keep her calm and still is proving challenging.

The only problem we've had is she has a slight dermatitis type rash near the wound where she's been trying to lick. The vet gave us cream for it but so far it doesn't seem to be having much impact.
