Can I see pix of your dogs in your car boots?

Im looking for a car that isn't very big.. But needs to have a boot big enough for a big dog.
I've seen a mazda 2 (online, can't actually go see them in person yet) that I like but I'm assuming the boot won't be big enough. Anyone got one and put their dog in the boot?
Failing that, thinking about a Honda jazz. But also, I need to see the boot..
So basically anyone got any pix of dogs in these boots, or any other recommendations of smallish cars with decent boots?
Thanks!

What breed of dog is it? I have no pictures but my estates have always been big enough for my border collie.

ChickenGotLegs · 22/03/2021 13:09

Sorry totally missed the part about you wanting a smaller car 🙈 a jazz isn't really that big tbh and I doubt the boot would be big enough for enough space.

wishes1111 · 22/03/2021 13:09

I have an Astra 62 plate ecotech and my adult spaniel fits in fine plus other bits, with a safety harness.

PollyRoulson · 22/03/2021 13:20

What breed of dog?

Gonzales27 · 22/03/2021 13:23

I've got a Renault Zoe and a large labradoodle and he fits in perfectly. It's quite a small boot but has more than enough height.

It was the main criteria for me when choosing a car as I also wanted something a small. It was really hard trying to figure out the height of the boots.

PrivateParty · 22/03/2021 13:47

He's a German shepherd. But it's my first car so don't want something big.

I'm a dog walker - and I have a Hyundai i10 that would fit a German Shepherd.

I have a divider between the boot and back seat, and a set-up in the back so I can fit one larger dog or two medium/small ones.

I had a fiesta and a Rottie... what I found was that it actually wasn’t the boot size that was the issue, it was the slope of the rear window cut into the boot size and made it too short.

So you want to look at shape rather than just size IMO.

PrivateParty · 22/03/2021 14:39

Yeah so looking for more hatchback rather than saloon type..

Labrador (40kg of him!) fits in our Fiesta boot.

He also fits in the back seat of the fiat 500 but then spends the whole journey licking my ear so not all that safe 🤣

LivingOnTheVeg · 22/03/2021 14:49

Would the back seat do if your main concern was a smaller car? I have a Beetle Cabriolet (with barely enough boot for your shopping!) and my Labrador has plenty of room on the back seats. Smile

PrivateParty · 22/03/2021 14:51

I'd rather him in the boot so I can take passengers too..

I used to have a Mazda 2 and I personally don't think it would be big enough between the size and the slope of it. x

My rottie was 40kg... he fitted, just he couldn’t stand up and turn round properly with it closed, which is fine for really short journeys, but not anything else.

Also he kept trying to sit and look out the window and ended up all squashed, lol.

It was before the last fiesta restyle though, so not the recent shape ones.

“Yeah so looking for more hatchback rather than saloon type..”

Fiestas are hatchbacks, just it had an awfy slopey rear window.

We used to fit our large our large lurcher in the boot of our golf. However MILs spaniel which was much smaller didn't like it at all. You ideally need to take the dog car shopping with you!

RosamundGarth · 22/03/2021 15:08

Years ago my sister went round car dealers to find a small car for our mum with the sole criterion of having to be able to fit a golden retriever in the boot. She got a Honda Jazz.

moosemama · 22/03/2021 15:49

I’m having the same dilemma today.

When I just passed my test we bought a Golf Estate, which easily accommodated two large Lurchers. So easy to drive and not as big as most estate cars. The only thing I didn’t like was rear visibility for reverse parking, but I got used to that.

Four years on, I was involved in an accident this weekend and due to the car just turning 10 years old, insurance have warned me that, despite minimal damage, it might be written off.

I now only have one Lurcher, who is just shy of 15 and a half. I also have three teen/young adult dc and I will need, occasionally, to fit all three of them in the back, but this time I would like a smaller car if possible.

I’m considering a Golf Hatchback or Hyundai i20. Mum has the Hyundai i30 and I could easily fit my current dog, plus the other one as a 20 week old in her boot, so I’m hoping the i20 will work for just my old boy.

I’ve also been looking at the Honda Jazz. Wondering about a Toyota Yaris as well.

I’m actually praying they decide to repair my estate, as I had only just renewed the insurance policy and wasn’t planning to change my car until next year.

Mini clubman. The rear seats split to fold down so you can still have a passenger in the back plus extra room for the dog. I have Alaskan malamutes, biggest is 46kg & he fits fine with one seat down. My smaller girl (32kg) will fit in just the boot. It is deceptively spacious as you don't lose any "slope" room with the back doors. Ds is 6ft 1in & dd is 5ft 11in. I can fit in both of them with leg room and one dog.
(Pic not my actual car)

I have a 23kg Eurasier ..so a bit shorter than a GSD but quite a chunk.
I currently have a Fiat panda and she fits fine (I have the bench seat slid forward if no one is in the back for more space) The Panda is tall and square so ideal and not too high for jumping into.

My previous car was a little renault twingo and that was fine too!

She's also been in a Mini but that was tight with the seats up, and my DD2's older model corsa was ok too..not sure about the newer ones tho as they seem more sloping..hers is a 56 plate (and still going strong)

I don't like large cars so when I was looking I took the dog with me!

Derbee · 22/03/2021 20:03

Our Labrador fits in the boot of my VW Golf. Wouldn’t want to do it for long journeys though. For longer journeys, we fold the seats down and strap him in with his harness on

SlothMama · 24/03/2021 14:24

I have an akita and he fits in the boot of my Audi A3, when he lies down he has plenty of room. But the issue is when he sits up, he couldn't comfortably sit up for long periods because of the slope of the boot.

PrivateParty · 24/03/2021 14:45

Yeah.. I can't wait til we're allowed to travel again and car show rooms are open again so I can go round looking in boots haha

Witchgonebad · 24/03/2021 15:23

We took our dog car shopping with us. If he didn’t fit comfortably in the boot we walked away.
Unfortunately he’s massive and even a Discovery Sport was too bloody small! Confused

The problem with modern car design is the boots are all sloped. Large dog owners need square boots.

WeAllHaveWings · 24/03/2021 15:46

A Mazda 2 is 4,070mm length while a ford focus estate is 4,667mm.

I was worried when we got it, but it is only 597mm of a difference which you don't notice when driving, and with parking sensors no problem parking (ours also has automatic parallel parking which is amazing, 7 years on I am still in awe of how it parks perfectly every time!) and it has plenty of room for a dog. It also doesn't have a lip on the boot so easy for the dog to jump in and out themselves, or easier to lift in when needed as they get older/if they are unwell and need to get to the vets.

DachshundThroughTheSnow · 27/03/2021 10:30

Two of our dogs, our car is a Ford kuga. Plenty of space left too Smile
