Cone of shame for greyhound - anything that stays on?

Long story but my absolute hero of a grey is finally home after nearly a month in dog hospital. He has three open wounds that are clean and healing and doing really well. He has come home with a cone of shame that is too big for his slender neck and tiny head. It does have lacing to tighten it a bit but he's managed to remove it once already and he really must not get at his dressings. I'll obviously check on him in the night (he won't do stairs) but I can't just stay awake. Anyone know of any products designed for greyhounds that won't slip over their tiny heads?

We had the same trouble and found a compromise by looping it through the house collar but we also bought a medi vest from the vet that had poppers so she couldn't get to the healing area- this clearly only works if it's on the body rather than legs or tail!

BigWolfLittleWolf · 20/03/2021 18:32

I think the vests that do up with poppers are much better than cones.
Far less stressful for the dog

I would love one but the one he really can't leave alone is on his elbow

Can you not get him a long legged suit from somewhere that covers them all , poor boy .

CupcakesK · 20/03/2021 20:09

I’ve also looped the cone through the house collar, seemed to work well

Tswiftscat · 20/03/2021 20:11

I looped it onto the collar as well, worked ok but she was still very unimpressed with it!

bagelbaby · 20/03/2021 20:12

We had the stretchy body suit thing for our cat. Was a great alternative if a little weird

Chunkymenrock · 20/03/2021 20:12

The vests/suits can work well but are soon chewed through if they're determined to get at the wound. That's why the cones are essential and why you're given them by vets. I think you need a decent fabric collar through the cone loops, a little tighter than normal. Or, the Buster inflatable ring collar could be worth a look as it would prevent his head being able to reach it at all?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 20/03/2021 20:14

I'll ask the vet about a long legged suit tomorrow (it would have to be something that wouldn't increase movement of the dressings when he moves) and have looped it around his collar for tonight - thanks all!

When our lurcher was injured, the vet gave us something like this - it worked well plus he does love a pillow so he quite enjoyed having a portable headrest. I was surprised at how much it restricted his access to his stitches!

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2021 20:56

I bought a onesie for my lurcher when he had wounds he wouldn't leave alone. You can also get a more fitted Long Johns , or could adapt a long sleeved t shirt quite easily - I've previously just used hair bands to gather up the excess fabric on their back

GigantosaurusRex · 20/03/2021 21:00

When I was last sat outside the vets I saw a greyhound wearing one of these

The dog had a dressing in its leg and when I was googling there is a version called nova guard which is said to be an alternative to the cones - I think it attaches around the ears and is narrower but you need the correct length.

GigantosaurusRex · 20/03/2021 21:01

My mum used my sons pyjamas once to cover her dogs elbow injury too.

Scattyhattie · 21/03/2021 01:32

I tied the cone to the inflatable donut as the size that was long enough to cover pointy nose was massive on the neck. The donut portable pillow does seem high on a greyhounds wish list rather than being a hindrance but depends on wound area how successful it is.

Definitelyrandom · 21/03/2021 09:43

Not speaking from experience but would a muzzle work?

barebetty · 21/03/2021 09:55

Yes - we've always used a muzzle. Never got on with cone.

barebetty · 21/03/2021 10:12

I love that visor! Very 2021 Grin

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 21/03/2021 11:23

A muzzle would be great but he absolutely loathes them unfortunately, despite (because of?) being an ex racer.

He might just have to live with the cone. I love the look of the Optivisor but I think it is likely that he would still be able to get at the dressing that I am particularly anxious about. Poor chap. But tying it to the house collar has at least stopped him from taking it off - much appreciated.
