Older labradoodle, new buddy?

Hi all! Would appreciate your advice.

We have a 10 year old labradoodle who is slowing down now. He’s such a lovely dog and the whole family love him to bits.

Obviously we hope he has a good few years left yet but it’s noticeable that he’s getting older now. We are wondering by about getting him a buddy. Our thoughts were that he may enjoy the company and also that the kids may find it easier to adapt once he does eventually pass if they have already become attached to a new dog too. We wouldn’t want to replace him.

But worried that he would feel replaced though and that puts us off. Does anyone have any experience of what is best thing to do in this scenario?

Also, with a new dog I’m not sure what sort of breed we’d get either as we didn’t actually set out to have a labradoodle! We took him in from a friend when she couldn’t cope with him (he was approx 12 months old and she had a new baby) and we just kept him ever since. He’s such a lovely boy. We’re keener on the idea of adopting from a dog’s home than buying a puppy - but scared about bringing home a dog with behaviour problems around our young children.

Any advice on what’s best would be appreciated, thank you. We’re happy to put off getting a dog for a long while if you think he’d be happier on his own with us.

If you want a second dog then think about the reasons why YOU want the dog.

Never get a dog for your existing dog.

Give the time you would spend training a new dog to your old dog and he will be very happy Smile
