How do you get a stubborn dog to move?

Our dog is 14 months old, not castrated due to some nervous/fear aggression in the past although he's pretty much through that now. We often walk along the canal and he's an absolute bugger for refusing to walk if there's a dog following us.

Today, we caught up with an elderly lady on the tow path ahead of us. She had a sweet old poodle with her. The dogs said hello to eachother and had a little play, she then said for us to walk ahead as we were quicker than her. My dog just wouldn't budge, no treat or command would move him. I ended up having to drag him away. He'd walk a few steps then lock his legs again. I did eventually get him moving with lots of dragging! It must have looked awful. Once we were a good distance away he got moving properly again.

What should I have done? Its a canal so there's no where else to go! It was quite embarrassing!

Have you tried enticing him with a toy instead of food? Lots of high pitched praise and a firm "let's go!"

Try jogging away so he doesn't have time to think he just follows on autopilot?

Thanks both. I'll take a squeaky toy with me next time and I'll try the jogging too.

What breed is he? (Has a breed in mind but does not want to project and is probably wrong anyway Smile)

We don't know for sure but terrier with some spaniel in there somewhere.

Do you treat your dog at home regularly?

@Badgershy

In my experience, terriers love squeaky toys and spaniels love to carry a ball or tug in their mouths.

I would try bringing both with you. When she refuses to walk, lure her forward with the squeaky toy.
