Posting for company as I lie on the sofa, sure there'll be no sleep tonight. Ddog has a gastro bug. He's feeling sorry for himself, it's been an unsettled 16 hours at home with him going out to vomit regularly. His stomach is still making alarming noises so I'm not going to be sleeping any time soon!

Just hoping we can get by without a trip to the out of hours vet. I had a video vet call earlier and he wasn't dehydrated or totally lethargic so it's watch and wait.

Any great tips for a puky dog? He can't keep anything down, not even one slice of boiled egg. He doesn't want to drink but can still pee so must have some liquid in him.

I'm confident it's not a blockage so not panicking, just want to help him along with recovery as he must feel really rotten.

I don't have any advice for poorly ddog but I didn't want to read and run.

I'm sure he's feeling rotten, bless him. As long as you're there with him he will feel safe at least.

Really hope he feels better soon, OP.

Thanks. He looks at me with eyes that seem to say "make it stop, mum" and I'm so sad for him!
Of course now he is dozing and I'm on edge, listening to every gurgle, ready to run to open the back door!

I've been there. It was a long night with unsettled sleep.
I made a comfy bed for my boy downstairs rather then upstairs (quicker to get him outside) we fed plain boiled rice a tablespoon every hour and lots of fresh water.
I did take up all his used bowls, bedding and boil wash the lot just in case some bug was lingering.
The vets said to give it 24hrs and monitor him, thankfully around that time he started eating a bit more. I think this is just a waiting game but I hope your doggy feels better soon.

I did it in a campervan, with the bed up a ladder, and a dog who insisted she would only settle if she were under the duvet with me.

Carrying a retching dog down a ladder every 20 minutes is high on my list of pet-ownership experiences I never want to repeat. It was - of course - dark and raining and, because we were in a campsite I had to go out with her on a lead every bloody time.

Then, another time, I was woken by her predecessor vomiting in my hair.

Sympathies. It will pass.

Oh your poor DDog, awful when they are poorly and a long night in front of you, been there a few times with my current DDog, who has the most sensitive tummy. Just over yet another upset that dragged on weeks and ended up having her bloods done, fortunately looks like she had an infection and nothing sinister. Hope your DDog feels better soon x

Omg, if we were in a campervan I'd be besides myself! That must have been a total nightmare.
I'm sorry that you all have been here too.

Small sign of improvement here. We got 10 minutes dozing, then Ddog sprinted to the back door, I followed, expecting him to be sick. But it was the cat coming back in. Ddig just wanted to greet her.

(dCat's favourite activity in the world is winding up ddog)

Bless you both. If worried about fluid intake could you try a syringe of water? I wouldn't worry too much for tonight though.

When my dog had a bug/stomach upset last time she would only tolerate some toast (?!) and a few syringes of water. She was absolutely fine within a day or so though.

It’s horrible when they are ill, our two have just got over kennel cough and it was a long week of them being housebound, hacking away and looking forlorn.

ByTheStarryNight · 20/03/2021 06:05

Finally got a few hours of interrupted dozing. Only interrupted once for dog sick. The other times were because ddog and dcat were chasing each other Hmm. I'm no longer worried about him if he's got the energy for repeated cat chasing.

Thanks for the replies last night, it was helpful to have company and empathy. Hope all your dogs are happy and well, enjoy your day.

Glad DD is on the mend!

When mine have any kind of stomach upset I generally put them on a 24 hr fast, I think it really helps to reset the guts, same applies to humans.

Motorina · 20/03/2021 07:11

Awww bless! Glad he’s feeling well enough to chase the cat.

When ours have had upset tummies, I have given them rice water before moving on to rice. I boiled white rice in plenty of water, strained off the water and fed it to DDog a few tablespoons at a time, every hour until his tummy settled. Then plain rice and took it from there.
