Large Munsterlander

We will be in a position to get another dog in the next couple of years and are considering a Large Munsterlander. I have only ever met one and it was young so couldn’t give me much information about it.

My friend who is a trainer has worked a couple and they were less high energy than expected.

Over the years I’ve had many dogs, spaniel, setter, collie and various crosses of similar ilk. I’m wondering how they would compare.

I've trained with a couple.

One: delightful, intelligent, biddable and gentle (and needed gentle handling - a very soft dog). Needs stimulation and a job to do but a sweetheart.
Other: borderline out of control, very dominant over other dogs, massive prey drive, didn't listen to a damn thing his owner said. God knows what happened to him in the end, as they stopped coming to training and the dog was still wild.

My conclusion from that was twofold - firstly, check out the ancestry and ask the breeder lots about working ability, prey drive and temperament, and secondly, if you do get one, give it clear boundaries in a very fair way, and plenty of things to keep its brain busy.

They are beautiful dogs, but they're clever, and need an outlet.

Watching with interest.

Looking to get the mad pointer a friend next year, torn between a Small Munsterlander and a Korthals Griffon.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/03/2021 13:09

I knew a small Munsterlander many years ago when I lived in Germany.

One of the loveliest, friendliest, most laid back dogs I've ever known. Loved children.

As you're probably aware though, the large and small MLs are not related in any way, completely different breeds.

I’ve not heard of Korthals Griffin before. Lovely looking dog.

I may have a bit of a thing for slightly unusual, medium sized HPR dogs.

Any other suggestions for a little sister for this pointer x pointer?

Interesting @BoreOfWhabylon , I'd always presumed they had some not outrageously way back common ancestor.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/03/2021 16:31

No, SM is a breed that goes back hundreds of years. LM was black and white G longhaired pointer originally.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 20/03/2021 16:33

@MrsPernicious, if you like the HPRs, how about a Braque d'Auvergne? I know one and she's a lovely gentle dog.

I have one -
Good points - beautiful , intelligent , very healthy , and loves his family

  • Bad points - has always been a handful -High prey drive , very selective hearing , strong willed , separation anxiety , a bit nervy shadow watches , vocal , aloof with strangers , He is nearly 10 and still has tremendous energy and speed , still hard work, and still near zero recall ,if he sees something more interesting. I have met his litter sister a few times , she is calm and quiet , but also is a bit aloof I also have a flat coated retriever - and could handle five of her easier, than my Munster Love him to bits - but would not get another

That’s really helpful, thank you. The nervy part is a concern having had a nervy collie and the problems that caused, even with an enormous amount of work from the offset.
