Spinones

I know absolutely nothing about Spinones apart from the fact that there is one that lives locally to us and is adorable and quiet.

Does anyone know anything about their character traits and whether they make good pets? This is not for a rash, hurried puppy purchase. I am nothing if not a stickler for research - we are currently greyhound owners and have a good 6 or so years left with her (I hope!) but I like to be prepared in advance and I can't bear the thought of life without a hound of some description. In reality we will probably just get another exceedingly lazy, low maintenance retired racer but I'm exploring the options.

Sorry I have no advice but just dropping on hoping for pictures of spinones as I think they are gorgeous Grin.
One lives near us and his name is Tony Spinone which makes me laugh.

Hope you get some advice!

From my experience, they are large, need a good amount of exercise, need hand stripping and they drool like crazy.

However they are apparently known for being very friendly and good pets.

Wolfiefan · 19/03/2021 17:08

Large, not easy to train. Stubborn and need plenty of exercise. Gorgeous though!

OK - the drooly may put me off - and yes I wondered about the coats.

Exercise is all good - I'm planning to be practically retired by then and running a good deal.

@ultragroupie - yes I fear I may be going on looks alone!

Not easy to train you say....hmmmm, maybe time to rethink. (But soooo pretty!)

I've got one. She is the soppiest, cuddliest, softie of a dog and the perfect dog to have around small children. She is a complete Wotamess and often looks as if there might be a bird nesting somewhere about her eyebrows... She is the filthiest animal I've ever owned and you can tell she lives in our house despite my best efforts. She loves mud, reminds me of a hippo! They have beards and when they drink, or eat they get grub in their beards and then shake and it goes everywhere. Our walls, I despair. Our family always duck instinctively when she has a drink. But worth it for the heart of gold and the eyebrows! She is pretty clever and quite well trained which is lucky because she's big and would be scary if not closely controlled. Kind of the opposite of a greyhound!

Seriouslymole · 19/03/2021 17:14

@Bogoroditse - total opposite. I'm kind of hoping for our next dog to be one who might run with me and do long, rambling walks - greyhound has to be prized off the sofa but is utterly perfect for this point in our life.

Does she bark? Excessively vocal dogs are a bit of a stopping point for me. My best friend has an Airedale who barks non-stop and it would just drive me crackers.

I like your style, OP. It took us 5 years to get our beloved dog... who is now 5+ years himself.
I only know of one Spinone, Ted, who is an absolute dote. Based on this one that I know, what an amazingly lovely dog. Typical gun dog... needs big walks, is great with the kids in his family, affectionate, loyal, smart, playful, regal. Based on Ted alone, I want one! Sorry that my information is limited. But I can only speak positively of them!

villainousbroodmare · 19/03/2021 17:18

They are a bit like hairy bassets. Huge, strong, drooly, messy, affectionate.

longwayoff · 19/03/2021 17:19

Utube guilty spinone.

BobsDouble · 19/03/2021 17:19

A good friend of mine, who I walk with sometimes, has one (and had another before this one).

The major downsides are the drool and the dirt that they attract. There’s always a lot of cleaning to be done after a walk, which isn’t necessarily that much fun when you are cold and wet and muddy yourself! They seem to be very strong and powerful too. If this one spots a hare or a dog she doesn’t like when on lead then her owner gets pulled to the ground. This has happened a few times! The one I know adores all people but isn’t so keen on lots of other dogs.

Bogoroditse · 19/03/2021 17:43

She does enjoy a good bark, we have a footpath running across the hill opposite our garden and her favourite hobby is scaring the walkers with her huge deep woofs. If they came up she'd cuddle them and then slobber all over them. I also have a much younger lab who is noticeably more grown up than my spinone already, she's such a child. She's 12 now and would still happily do a long walk.

BeeyatchPlease · 19/03/2021 17:57

My friend has one and he's a total darling! He's a big, gentle gent of a dog but he was a bit of a maniac when he was younger. He's definitely chilled now he's older and he loves people, cats, kids and other dogs. He's called Lorenzo and I think that makes me love him all the more. We look after him when she goes on holiday (remember what one of those is?!)
He can walk and walk and walk and she often takes him out hillwalking and hiking. It's almost like his coat is made of glue as he picks up all sorts of grass, twigs, heather, mud etc and needs a good brush or hosing after most walks.
He's a bit slobbery because of his beard, lots of mess when he drinks but a quick wipe with a flannel sorts that out.
They make great pets though, I'd have one in a heartbeat!
