Dogs and Flowers

Looking for some wisdom!

I have a vague notion that some flowers are poisonous to dogs. Is this if they eat the flowers, or is it something to do with the scent/pollen? Can we safely have cut flowers in the house, if they are out of her reach? Any types we must always avoid?

I could have totally picked this up wrong! We don't have our dog very long, so hasn't been an issue up to now.

Here's the Dogs Trust list:

www.dogstrust.org.uk/help-advice/factsheets-downloads/factsheetpoisonoussubstances09.pdf

Many of these are most likely to just result in an upset tummy, but others are very toxic and could make your dog (especially small or puppy) very unwell indeed and in worst case be fatal.

You're right to be thinking about what flowers you have in the house (and where you put them) but do consider plants in the garden too

This is so helpful, thanks @wetotter - I had a quick look through it - it seems that the issue mainly is if the plant is eaten. I will check it properly before buying any flowers for the house, or planting outside. The garden has nothing in it yet, we aren't in the house long either!

I still have flowers in the house, but right in the middle of a table, which DDog can't reach so that both flowers and dropped petals are out of reach.

We have an established garden, with iffy plants in it, so DDog doesn't go out alone

I have all sorts of flowers and plants in my house and garden, and I’m sure some are toxic to dogs.
However, I know my dog and he wouldn’t eat them.
