Has anyone adopted an ex-breeding dog?

We have just adopted our third dog-our first 2 we adopted at 16 weeks old ( brother and sister) They came from a family home after their first owner had a change in circumstances. They are now 4 and very easy going with everyone ( sometimes a little barky especially if squirrels are involved)
Our new dog is a little ex breeding pup that had been brought over from those horrific puppy farms in Ireland. She has never been in a house, slept on a comfy sofa, been on a lead or walk and isn't house trained. However she's the most gentle soul , so trusting and loves a cuddle and company. My other 2 are ignoring her mainly- no animosity just taking a few days to adjust.
I just wanted to know if anyone has any tips with toilet training, she is supposed to be 4 years but my vet thinks she is older due to the state of her teeth. Whenever she eats she squats down and wee's next to her dish-she does this a couple of times with each meal.
I take her out in the garden every couple of hours and she copies my other dogs in toileting outside. It's just the mealtime wee that seems to be a habit!
Thank you!

My SIL has an ex breeding bitch who is massively damaged by her experience - she'd obviously only ever been in a pen in a barn and had no idea on not walking through her own waste.
Toilet training her has taken a lot of work and patience as she'd literally never had any choice as to where to go.
With yours, would it maybe work to put her food on a puppy pad so that she is going in an acceptable place, then you could transition the pad away eventually. Or think about feeding her outside for now

Our girl is an ex breeding dog. She was in terrible condition when we got her, even after a few months treatment in a rescue. We were lucky that they toilet trained her before we got her, but she'll only go on grass.

There's a great training group on Facebook where you'll get all the help you could need. Join and have a read of the guides...they're excellent, and have special rescue ones.

Would it work to feed her outside so she at least never pees indoors?

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!
@CMOTDibbler she has a very similar history to your SIL dog. I have been told she is 4 but the vet agreed with me today she is older due to the state of her teeth. I think she will have to relearn a habit formed over years so I went and bought puppy pads today in a bid to gently start moving the pad away from her food. I also fed all 3 outdoors which was a great idea so huge thanks.

I hope it works for her. Its been a long journey for SILs little girl, and a couple of years on there are still things that scare her. She fortunatly is quite food motivated, so she'll go to dh and ds now after huge amounts of sausage but is very wary of people in general

nancypineapple · 16/03/2021 20:52

@magicstar1 thankyou- I will join that group now. I'm so sorry to hear about your beautiful dog too. I am beyond angry at people not doing their research and fueling this illegal puppy farm trade. She has such a beautiful soul and is so trusting and loving however she is very jumpy at any sudden movements. My Dh was using a broom in the garden and she froze so we thinks she must have been hit-just devastating to think of someone doing that.

@ThisConundrum thankyou-I fed all of them outside today so at least that was 3 wee's outdoors! ( I'm giving her 3 meals a day since she is so thin and have to do the same for my other 2 as they will be sulking otherwise!)

It’s heartbreaking isn’t it. My poor girl was quite bald and had leathery skin, she’s missing a few bottom front teeth an has damage to the tip of her ear. She was so nervous but after a few months her confidence has grown. She growled at my dad on his first visit...now she runs to get a toy when she hears him...absolutely adores him.
We brought her to see some of the rescue volunteers last week and they couldn’t believe how big and fluffy she is...she’s beautiful!

ginandcv · 16/03/2021 21:47

Oh wow. So heartbreaking. Can I ask what breeds the ex breeding bitches are?

I'm thinking poodle or shitzu?

CMOTDibbler · 16/03/2021 21:57

My SILs is a cockerpoo. If you'd seen her - her urine burned feet, the way you can't lean over and pick her up (her only human interaction was to be picked up and put in with a stud they think), her worn out and emaciated body at 5, and her terror at the world then you'd hope people would be hugely more careful about buying a puppy and heed all the warning signs rather than turning a blind eye for a cute puppy

ginandcv · 16/03/2021 22:05

Oh that's awful Sad I think everyone who has one honestly thinks they've done their due diligence and their pup couldn't possibly have come from a puppy farm.

FlamingGoat · 16/03/2021 22:07

We have an ex stud dog. He was kept in a pen and only let out for servicing . Its taken two years for him to stop flinching around men. Toilet training was a hard slog. He used to scream when he was brought into the house. He also had to have 18 teeth out . He now has his spot on the sofa and has finally learnt to play with toys. We wouldn't be without him.

magicstar1 · 16/03/2021 22:41

Mine is a German Shepherd. She was kept in a whelping box her whole life, and a warden pestered them into giving her up. I think they only handed her over because she turned 5. The rescue tried to put a collar on her and found one embedded in her neck.
She didn’t know how to eat a bone, play with a ball, or any kind of fun. Now she loves her toys...it’s like she’s had her puppy time later in life.

nancypineapple · 16/03/2021 23:28

This fills me with hope for our new girl @magicstar1-she has no idea how to play! We have been taking her around the block
which takes forever as she's never been on a lead/harness and seems very unsure of outdoors. Her skin is very pale and not got any darker pigmentation due to the sun like my other 2 ( cavachons but I think she's actually a cockerpoo as she has very long gangly legs that fold in under her) so we think she was kept indoors in a crate too. She's been shipped over from Ireland where puppy farms are still legal. Unfortunately the pups get sent over via Northern Ireland and sold around the UK to uneducated buyers. She actually barked at the tv today for the first time and my other dogs all ran to her in surprise! Thanks for all your replies-especially lovely to hear how your pups are now thriving @FlamingGoat , @CMOTDibbler and @magicstar1
