How to transport a dog and 3 kids?

Hi,
We are picking up our puppy in a few weeks - he is a border terrier and will be 8 weeks.
I imagine we will get some kind of carrier to actually bring him home, as he will be very small, and we will not all be going to collect him - I guess I can get some advice from the breeder on that part. Thinking forward however, we have 3 children and a car which is reasonable large om terms of boot space but is not an estate (though we can remove the parcel shelf). I was imagining we could get one of the harnesses which attaches to a seatbelt, but not sure how that would work/ if it would be safe if we are all in the car (so three back seats occupied).
I’m sure it must be doable, as there are plenty people around who appear to have a dog, 3 kids and not a massive car.... but would appreciate some advice. TIA

Get a boot shaped crate for the boot. Mine cost about £50. It is win win in so many ways... Children can't annoy the dog. Dog can't wander around with muddy feet in the passenger zone.

For the actual journey home when you collect him, take one driver and one adult or very sensible older child, and a smallish crate that will fit on the back seat, so that the passenger can be close by to soothe and reassure the pup and shout out that a stop is going to be needed as pup is suffering with travel sickness and needs care.

We've got a crate in the boot but our dog is small so it doesn't take up too much room.

Second this. We dog sit for a friend occasionally and it’s nightmare when he gets muddy paws all over our car (totally my fault for encouraging him to play in the mud 😁)

She just pops him in the back of her car in the crate and he curls right up.

Thanks - @QueenOfLabradors yes think just myself and my daughter will collect and planned to get a carrier so she can sit with him on back seat.
Those who mentioned the boot crate - is this ok for a boot in car that isn’t an estate but if remove the parcel shelf? Thinking about potential longer journeys for holidays etc.

Yes, that's fine.

We use a van, so Ddog is separate in her crate. Lots of room for the four DC too.
