DPup is 12weeks. She’s had both sets of vaccinations but hasn’t been for a walk yet (1 day to go until she’s 2 weeks past her second vaccine)
This morning before breakfast she vomited a small amount of clear fluid. I waited a couple of hours to give her breakfast to see how she was, then gave her 3/4 of her normal amount. She was fine. She’s had a normal day, not been lethargic or upset, played energetically A LOT, no problems. She’s drank normally throughout the day, and toilettes normally.
I’ve just given her her normal dinner (which is 1.5 times more than her normal breakfast as she always wants more at night) and 45minutes later she’s vomited again. She’s only vomited once, and not a large amount (don’t know if that matters?), maybe 1/6 of her meal or less. She’s happy in herself and alert etc, but at what point does she need to be seen?
If she was one of my dc I’d be confident to watch and wait, expecting it to pass, but not sure how it works with puppies (DDog is 10 so it’s been a while!)

I tend to err on the side of caution with small puppies. Could she perhaps be eating really fast? I don’t bowl feed my pup as he inhaled his food so we do kongs, licky mats, scatter feeding etc and use his food for games/training, he gets the same amount just not in one sitting.

Have you noticed her eating anything in the garden she shouldn’t - my pup is a huge grubber. I Think it’d keep an eye as long as you know pup is happy bright and not lethargic, you could call them for advice. Hope your wee pup is ok and feeling better soon

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/03/2021 18:20

Just called the vet. They said as long as she’s not throwing up immediately after eating, is toileting normally and not lethargic she should be ok.
I’m 99% sure she hasn’t eaten anything she shouldn’t as I’m always watching her when she’s in the garden (or awake in general!)
I’m a bit more anxious than normal as my last pup developed an aspirational pneumonia overnight after vomiting once the previous morning and had to be PTS that lunchtime. I’ve lost sight of when to worry/ when not to.

Aw glad she’s ok, sorry to hear about your other pup how awful I’d be more concerned too. If I’m worried at all I just call them and they’ll ask to see him or give advice. He was really poorly a couple of weeks ago, went to the vet had some treatment and came home but really wasn’t right still so I took him back. Still not sure if he’d eaten something or had a bug but I was so worried. I’m sure he’s causing me more Greys than my kids.

Id change to 3-4 small meals a day until older and if pub is sick again just give chicken and rice for a day or soy. We have an 8 month old jack russell who only eats small amounts at a time

pigsDOfly · 16/03/2021 13:09

Yes, a 12 week old puppy should be having 3 or 4 meals a day.

It's very possible she's vomiting because her stomach can't cope with the amount of food she's eating at each meal, which is probably why she didn't vomit when you gave her the smaller meal.

Also, the advice on quantities on dog food packets or tins is generally way more than most puppies or dogs actually needs to be well fed and healthy.

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/03/2021 16:20

I queried the number of meals with the vet when we got her: the breeder was giving 2 meals but I always understood it should be more. The vet said for her breed 2 was fine (she is a v v large breed)

Is that bad advice, then?

Ah okay. If that's the way the breeder fed her and your vet is saying it's the way she should be fed then fair enough.

It won't harm any puppy to have two meals a day rather than three or four but more meals spread it out and I thought it might be a bit gentler on her stomach.

It does tend to be the usual feeding regime with puppies, but if she's used to two meals a day and it's always worked for her then clearly it isn't that that's making her vomit.

Wildswimming3 · 16/03/2021 20:25

It wont do any harm to change to 3 meals, even for a large breed. Their tummies are growing too, give the same amount but split into 3. Pup will sleep more too Smile

Our puppy used to do hunger pukes in the morning quite often.

dontdisturbmenow · 17/03/2021 08:46

We had the same issue. Started around that age.

Turns out our dog has a very sensitive stomach. Were told to give chicken and rice. He got much worse. Turns out he can't digest rice at all. Not any form of pasta, eggs, raw bones.

On a special diet now and much better, although still has the occasional diarrhea and bit if throwing up 12 months later.

pigsDOfly · 17/03/2021 09:39

Yes, chicken and rice definitely seems to be the go to food for dogs with sensitive stomachs but my dog can't eat more than a very small amount of chicken before it causes awful diarrhea.

Feeding dogs can be a bit of a minefield sometimes.

AvaCallanach · 17/03/2021 11:23

We were told sweet potato and white fish for sensitive stomachs.
