Chubby dog

I'm ashamed to say my dog is now fat.

I've been very lax lately because I've been working so bloody hard and I put her on butternut box in jan and she's packed the weight on, she gets a 3 mile walk every day and most days she's in day care running around.

I noticed she was putting weight on in late January so I cut her portions by half. But she's still putting weight on!

So can anyone recommend me a food to help her lose weight? I will put her on kibble if needed and I will do anything to get her weight down.

She's a 2 year old border terrier and I love her to pieces, I feel awful I've let this happen I think it's the butternut box and maybe the treats..

She was spayed in October for medical reasons, she had a lot of phantom pregnancies and was nesting all the time. Her uterus ruptured whilst being removed so it was incredibly necessary!! (She hasn't ever had puppies so no idea why)

She was 7kg at the spay in October and then tonight she's 9.5!

Please help me!!

I don't know if it's the same with females but our male dog had to have his weight closely monitored after being neutered.
He could easily pile the weight on so we had be be quite strict with his diet which wasn't easy as he was a lab!
We used to give him less kibble but added veg to pack his food out so he still had volume but with less calories.
There are low fat foods available. I don't know much about them though. We buy through Millies wolf heart and I know they stock a low fat variety.

We had the same issue in that mine was 17kg and he needed to be 15kg at the most. We are half way there.

I wouldn't move to kibble as you have to feed so much less in volume that your dog might feel very hungry. A good wet food can give them more volume for the same calories. I just cut down the percentage slightly over time.

What about treats? We now count them out so we don't over feed. Treats also consist of carrots and steamed veg.

Full prey model raw helps with weight loss. Try that for a while. Look it up first, and do it properly.

What treats does she get? Borders are small dogs and it only takes a treat here or there to boost her calories. Ideally use part of her daily ration as food rewards, a lot of treats are surprisingly calorific.

I have similar dogs. The spayed female eats only half the amount of the intact male as she gains weight otherwise, poor love! Both are equally active.

Calories should be reduced by 10% after neutering. The only safe effective way to achieve weight loss in dogs is with a proper diet plan and weighing of daily food allowance. Your vet nurse at your vets practice can do this for you.

Mine put on lots of weight and we got told off by the vets last summer Blush

He's lost six kilos since then - he was 22kg and is now hovering around 16kg or so which is ideal for him. We cut his food down, limited treats, introduced lots of veggies instead - he now has tomatoes, cucumber and carrots most days, and upped his exercise considerably.

He's been roughly the same weight now since Christmas 😊 good luck!

They can really like on the pounds after spaying.

You could try a low-calorie kibble ('lite and senior' sort of thing) and give some bulk with vegetables if she'll eat those (mine love cabbage stalks and carrot tops...)

You'll look at her portion size and feel really mean, but it's better for her in the long run. I'm dreading spaying my bitch as she loves her food and we run our dogs lean.

*pile on the pounds...

I'd actually suggest around 25% is a better reduction in calories

@Veterinari thank you, I might move to a different food!

My lab has been on Hills Metabolic +Mobility for some time now. It comes as kibble and as tins, and was recommended by my vet.
He is in great shape - always hungry but that’s lab territory, but he gets a decent amount of it.
