Collect puppy couple days early

I know puppies shouldn’t be collected before 8 weeks old - but how much difference does a couple of days make? Would it be ok to collect at weekend if they turn 8 weeks on tue?

If the OP wants anything other than random
anecdotes surely she would be better consulting a qualified vet or a lawyer? This is an anonymous forum. I was relating my own experience- or random anecdote, as you call it.

I think she was probably looking for answers to her questions/informed advice.

I'm not sure how what you did once in a different country helps?

Sorry my last comment was aimed at @Veterinari
My partner is a vet with 40 years’ experience and a PhD from one of the most prestigious vet schools in the UK. He has no concerns about the welfare of our puppy. That doesn’t alter my post - it’s still a random anecdote.

@blowinahoolie

I was personally pleased the vaccinations were all done by the breeder when she was dropped off at 12 weeks of age. Depends on how you look at it. Longer with litter mates and their mum for some breeds is beneficial.
The I know not why wasn’t a criticism btw, just that toy and giant aren’t my forte, I just know for some reason it seems to be 12 weeks with those.

I know with some breeds that’s way too late really is all. I remember reading research ages ago that recommended different ages for different breeds and for instance GSDs were really early.

Grin you're right it still a random anecdote.

Thanks for sharing your partners irrelevant biography though. Is that supposed to mean something or are you just attempting to boost your credibility by association with a random old bloke with a vet degree and a phd?

Any other irrelevant info to contribute? What did you have for dinner?
Do you prefer cats or dogs?

You could derail this thread endlessly...

My point is that since this is an anonymous forum I would not rely on it for informed advice - from anyone.

Yes there are different ages for the reduction of neophobia/onset of socialisation period in different breeds, but regardless important aspects of socialisation like bite inhibition (learned from siblings/mum) tend not to occur until after 6 weeks old, and there's no benefit of rehoming prior to 8 weeks though potentially some benefits of rehoming later depending on the breed.

Well, once again. Thanks for sharing.

Ok, but is this an independent vet or the sellers vet? 99.9% of vets act in the interest of the animals they care for but remember there is 0.1% who see it as a pure business. If this is the sellers vet I would wonder if his advice is totally true. If this is a breeder they will be a profitable client. Will they really say anything bad and loss a client.

AlmostD · 11/03/2021 19:09

How would I check the dogs health history through an independent vet?!

We are specifically looking for a mixed breed. Know for being generally healthier / live longer than pedigrees

How do you “know” this? If you have actual evidence could you please share? I haven’t found any proof that properly bred pedigrees are less healthy than mixed breed with fewer checks and rules around breeding for welfare.

The length they live depends on the breed, cross two short lived breeds and they don’t magically outlive pedigrees who’s life expectancy is longer than average.

muddyford · 12/03/2021 17:58

The eight week rule applies to all puppies and kittens, regardless of who breeds them, licensed or not.

Oh I wasn’t arguing for before 8 weeks... just wandering off on a tangent...
