Ive just taken my 8 week puppy to the vet and been given two months of flea and worm treatment - simpatico trio. I’m just a bit worried if I should give my dog this as they said it was my choice

What are you worried about exactly? A vet will always give you a choice.

I use Itchpet as this seems to work well for us and they send the wormer every 3 months through the post.

Why is it worrying you?
I think it’s fairly standard. They pick up all sorts of things when out which you just can’t control (and if you try too much you get a dog that starts to see any old thing as a prize and then makes the really serious stuff hard to get off them) and with fleas they can pick up from other dogs.
Some people don’t like it as they don’t like using chemicals etc and do things like worm counts and rabbit ears and all sorts to check that they’re dog is fine but if you’re not prepared to do that I’d just use what the vet has provided.
Will say when we gave them first to our pup they were a little sick from it but isn’t like that now.

Thank you. Do you give your girl simparica trio? I just read on here from a few days ago that someone said it gave their dog seizures. What’s rabbit ears?

All medicines have potential side effects but in order to pass safety tests the side effects need to be rare and usually very mild. Millions of pet owners use simparica with no adverse effects

I was very against using such treatments when we first got ddog but after a couple of experiences with flea infestations and flea- dermatitis where he bit huge patches out of his coat I changed my mind!

He's 12 now and in fine health so I wouldn't worry too much. Smile

We use milpro I don’t know what the difference is to be honest. Rabbit ears are as the name suggests! They are dried rabbit ears! Some people believe that they clean out the worms because of the hair on them. I can’t say I know much about the science but it tends to be raw feeders that advocate it. I raw feed for main meals but still give them flea/ worm treatment given by the vet.

Ah! Thank you! I raw feed too for main meals

I now use Simpatico on my three dogs - very happy with it. I have one rescue with a bad flea allergy, who then turned out to have an itchy skin reaction to one of the active ingredients in Advocate (my previous spot on treatment) so I had "go back" to a treatment that was not as comprehensive called Advantage, but add in more oral wormers. Simpatico is much better.

I know of two dogs locally who died last year of lungworm, one was a lovely spaniel in my dog training group, the owners were only a few weeks behind with treating the dogs, but it takes hold quickly. As I have one puddle drinking dog as well as the one with flea allergies then having a regular flea and worm treatment is essential.

It helps that the dogs think of the pills as treats, they clearly taste good and I don't have to chase them round the house to administer it !

Oh and I've had dogs for 30+ yrs (about 13 dogs in all) and the only negative reaction I've ever had to any treatments has been this one rescue - and Advocate just made him itchy.

Remember the whole autism / vaccine scare. Just because a dog has a fit after a medication does not mean the medication caused it.

And I'm a raw feeder too - have been for over 20yrs - so I see all the discussions online about flea and worm treatments. My own conclusion is that it is better & safer for my animals if I give the treatment.
