We have a 9 month old who is gorgeous. Tell me about yours?

Our neighbour has two and they are incredibly noisy and the eldest is snappy. They do look cute though.

Makemedoit · 08/03/2021 20:43

Yes mine definitely likes the sound of his own voice but certainly isn’t snappy

Ours is funny and super-cute to the extent that everyone thinks he's a puppy - Nope fully grown just small.

Loves people so I get huge joy out of young children approaching and befriending him and them playing together. Or anyone really. Curiously more people orientated than dog orientated

Has been barky - we put a lot of effort into training him out of this

Did have the disc problem at 5 ... wish we had trained to use steps for beds/sofas earlier

No one has told him he is small so he is definitely a big personality in a small package.

Not always the calmest of dogs - again working on that, as would love to be able to just chill with friends with him at our feet - sometimes works but often gets too excited

One of mine is a complete doughnut, he is set on Zoomie mode ALL the time. Makes him a constant trip hazard. Only time he's still is when he's sitting on my feet while I make dinner, or watching animals on tv from the sofa. Goes absolutely nuts for broccoli, very suspicious of peas.

The other is a total slug, and gets a right arse on when he has to go for a walk. If he has to tell a bird off in the garden he does a perfect cartoon-esque bark where it seems like all four feet lift off the floor, which inevitably means he then needs to find some sunny grass to go and lay on to recover!

Both mini wires, the scruffy buggers of the breed. Highly comical when backcombed!

Chocolateandamaretto · 09/03/2021 09:26

All the mini dachshunds I know are very good with children and like people but vary from belligerent to downright aggressive to other dogs. They also bark a lot!

Following this as miniature dachshund is the breed we’ve decided on, have identified and spoken with a wonderful breeder who is really knowledgeable about the breed and we are just waiting to go on her waiting list

Love reading these stories. It'll probably be many years from now but I have my heart set on one.

Makemedoit · 09/03/2021 19:14

Mine has a wonderful personality. He’s lovely and v sociable with people. He spends most of the day on guard at our cottage window barking at anything that moves particularly other dogs and horses Grin

Haha they're so cute !

Juanbablo · 12/03/2021 19:45

Oh I want one! We see one at the park when walking our dog and it is SO CUTE! Her ears are so long and flappy and she's adorable.

Thischarmlessgirl · 13/03/2021 12:35

Mines a gobshite but we utterly adore her.
She loves people and is like Velcro, she can walk for miles and is super clever but so stubborn. Hates the rain.
The most affectionate dog we’ve ever had, Can’t walk down the road without somebody shouting sausage 😀
She doesn’t bark outside the house but is very territorial inside.
She drives me to distraction at times but honestly I don’t think I’d ever be without a dachshund now their characters are just something else!

Ps. She’s a silver dapple mini smooth. She especially loves children, fine with most other dogs after lots of socialising but can be a bit aloof with some.

I shout sausage 😳 it's involuntary. I mostly contain it in the car though.

I have a three year old miniature daschund. She is the hardest dog I have ever owned and I have really struggled to train her.
She is incredibly vocal and very needy. She took over two years to toilet train and her recall is non-existent.

That being said, she is a real character, super intelligent and very feisty. She can walk for miles and miles.
She is great with older adults (and works with those who live with dementia) but not great with children, but then she doesn't see many children.
She is the first small dog I have owned, but in 40 years she has been the most challenging dog I have owned. The separation anxiety was something else. I did however get her at 12 weeks old so some of her bad habits were already formed.
She lives with my two large breed hounds and absolutely rules the roost - even at 3 kilo compared to their 40kilo!
I won't be ever getting another daschund, but we have come to love her (but would prefer it if she did not bark at everything!).
She is very loving, but not an easy breed... No back issues to date but I keep her very lean and she does a lot of exercise.

Thischarmlessgirl · 13/03/2021 16:20

@glosbucks - they definitely aren’t for the faint of heart are they, I had Basset hounds previously and thought they were stubborn!
Toilet training was fine for my dachshund though if it’s really raining outside she will sometimes do a sneaky wee on the rug! Separation anxiety is fine and she can happily be left for a couple of hours but when we are home she likes to be on the lap.

Hovverry · 15/03/2021 20:24

Our family has owned dachshunds for generations. Generally they’re hard to housetrain, barky, love their family but nobody else. Some are snappy. They really are very likely to hurt their backs. Great characters and we love them all but they are not a good breed for young families.
