Puppy collapsed and was sick - Simparica Trio?

Last night my 4.5-month-old toy poodle woke up from a nap and collapsed. She was then sick and collapsed on her side again with her legs stiff, and when I picked her up and tried to give her water she again collapsed and couldn't walk. We immediately took her to the emergency vet where they put her on a drip and some kind of toxicity antidote (lipids I think?) as they were fairly sure it was something she had eaten in the park. I think it may have been her flea medication though –I gave her Simparica Trio on Saturday (the day before) and yesterday morning she was a bit off her food, which is super unusual. She ate it when I hand fed her, so I brushed it off and just thought she couldn't be bothered to eat it from the lickimat I'd given it to her in. Then in the park in the afternoon, she was running around like normal but was also trying to eat grass, which I read is sometimes done when dogs are trying to make themselves sick. She's never eaten grass before. I did some reading online about Simparica Trio and it seems like there are a lot of reports of side effects like this and I'm at a loss as to why the vet would prescribe it (there's actually a note on the box saying that they have switched brands due to supply issues caused by brexit...) Has anyone else had this experience with Simparica Trio? The vet is sending off samples (urine, vomit) for further testing to see if they can find out what it was, and if that comes back clean then they said it may be the Simparica. I'm so worried for my pup and any long term effects. The vet said she is doing a lot better today and that her neurological symptoms subsided at around 2am, although she still hasn't eaten anything since yesterday lunch. Thankfully, we should be able to pick her up later this afternoon, but it was just so awful yesterday, I thought she had died when she collapsed and she was so limp on the way to the vet. Any advice / other people's experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I guess you willnever know.

I am extremely cautious and will never give oral medication for ticks, worm or fleas.

I wormcount all my dogs and have a 16 year old dog that has never ever had worms in his life so think of all the wasted worm medication he would have been taking each month of his life for no reason.

Ticks are a problem in our area but not yet maybe in the next month so why vets ar pushing meciation that kills ticks all year round is again over kill (see what I did there!)

My dogs have never ever ever had fleas, they are brushed and groomed and checked daily.

So I personally would not give the simparica to your dog again. Look at the ingredients and if you do want to medicate look at alternatives with different ingredients.

Just to clarify I am NOT anti medication treatment etc but will only use it when required do if my dogs did have worms I would of course use a wormer but I will not use medication on a monthly basis unless needed. There are mega environmental and health issues with overuse and just general waste of medication only use if needed is my moto Smile

I really hope she is better and back with you soon. It must have been a frightening experience.

@PollyRoulson Thanks for your message! It was such a scary experience... After doing some research I definitely don't want to use Simparica again –it just seems too much of a coincidence and I feel that her going off her food in the morning before she went out to the park means it was likely something that happened to her before she went out rather than eating something in the park. I also groom our pup every morning so would definitely notice if she had fleas or a tick. The vet is sending off samples for a full toxicology report, so hopefully we get some kind of answers!

Oh brilliant that you are getting a full toxicology report - that hopefully will give you more information and feel more in control.

Bless her. Dog Biscuit for when she is better

@PollyRoulson Thank you! And yes... she will get such a lovely treat when she's fully recovered and off her bland food diet in a few days!
