Beloved but now gone - Do you reuse collar ?

It was worn by now lost dog, making it a much treasured and highly sentimental item.
It’s also in perfect condition, completely irreplaceable (I’ve tried - they don’t make them anymore) and would fit next pooch.

Do I keep it somewhere safe, or reuse it and enjoy her memento being part of our next chapter ?

We reuse the collar and leads if they are still in good nick. It connects the DDogs.

Not the collar, seems too personal, and I don't think the scent of the old boy would ever go. Lead yes. But that's me op, and if you want to reuse your old hounds collar do it. Your new dog won't mind I'm sureSmile

I do - my girl is now wearing the collar my last boy had, her old puppy collar is now being worn by little dog. I have a big bag of still servicable leads, collars, harnesses etc. You never know when you might need them!

Honeyroar · 07/03/2021 14:32

It’s completely up to you.

Our beloved dogs were laid to rest at the end of the garden with their own collar, blanket and favourite toy. I passed their rugs onto Streetpaws charity and we ended up rescuing a dog from a Mumsnetter in need, so he has some of the rugs too. I couldn’t bear using their leads, they all had their own colours, so got new ones. They’re still hanging in the utility. As time passes I’ll probably use them.

Same @Honeyroar - archeologists will find a fetching pair of tweed collars, and Duckie and Croc alongside their ashes scatter tubes if they ever excavate Grin Leads I've had no problem re-using but collars felt too personal for me.

harriethoyle · 07/03/2021 14:43

Duckie and Croc were the toys btw not the dogs' names!

lljkk · 07/03/2021 14:47

I will for my cat. It's not a disrespect to the original animal.

Easterbunnygettingready · 07/03/2021 14:59

We hung up ddog's collar in the utility room. With her jumper..
Sad

I set old dog's collar aside ready for the (as yet unborn) puppy to grow into. For me, that continuity felt really important. I waited til newpuppy was a year old, then let her sniff the collar all over whilst I told her all about old dog and how special she was, and cried, then put it on her.

It felt right and cathartic.

I think this is one of those things where there's no right or wrong. Do what feels right to you. It's okay.

Gosh @Motorina that’s so sweet Sad

I've still got dpup has ddogs id tag, I kept it on my keys and it makes them feel connected to me.

StrawberryFizz26 · 10/03/2021 21:36

God knows what happened at the start of that sentence!

muddyford · 12/03/2021 18:10

Not his adult collar that he was wearing when he was PTS, but I reused all his puppy collars. The old collar is in a box with his rosettes and certificates.
