Dog house smell

I’m very particular about smells.

How/can you get rid of dog smells taking over your home and your clothes?

I’ve had a cocker spaniel for a few weeks and the smell in the air is pungent Blush

We have three cats and a dog.

The dog doesn't have a bed - during the day he sleeps in/on blankets which are washed regularly. At night he sleeps on our bed and our bedding is washed weekly. I find dog beds are generally pretty pongy.

I vacuum at least once a day, often twice. Hard floors are swept twice a day as well to collect any stray hair/dirt.

Dogs leads, harness etc. are washed weekly otherwise they collect that wet dog smell.

Windows opened daily to let fresh air in.

I burn scented wax melts every day.

The dog doesn't really have toys (not because of the smell but because he destroys them) so one thing less to worry about.

We've had a cocker spaniel for about 4 months and I've been paranoid about doggy smell but it's been okay so far. We have hard floors downstairs and she's not allowed upstairs where we have carpets. Her bed is washed weekly. We have blankets on the sofa which we wash weekly at least, more often if they smell or get dirty. Soft furnishings get febreezed and the rooms get aired regularly. I use a steam cleaner on the floors. Zoflora is pet safe so that's what I use for surfaces and that keeps the place quite fresh.

If you've only had the dog three weeks, are they toileting in the house sometimes? Just make sure you're cleaning up well with one of those enzyme cleaners.

I've just got an air filter / purifier due to fostering an indoor cat for a couple of months. It completely removes the litter tray smell and leaves the room just smelling clean.

I've got a smart meter so can see it's not using very much energy, hardly registers, and it's on most of the day - most of the time is really quiet, it has smart sensors so kicks up a gear when it senses dust or smells .

I got the big one, just a bit smaller than my old lady shopping bag on wheels - I was a bit shocked at the size but it's quite light and I can move it from room to room easily. It gets rid of strong cooking smells too. I'll definitely keep on using it after the cat goes.

I was very house proud and liked a nice clean fresh smelling home......then I got a golden retriever and well now we are a dog home, smells and hair galore...like it or don't visit (covid safe) hehe I do try but its often to no avail and you do get used to the smell so I wouldn't know how bad it is

Generously sprinkle sodium bicarbonate overnight on the carpets/sofa, hoover it up in the morning. Voila! Great for vomit smell as well (sorry to be gross, but it's true. Sodium bicarbonate is a real odor eater. You can buy a tub of it off of Amazon).
Also, get a nice candle (I use Zara Home White Jasmine and it's beautiful!) Open the doors and windows when you can.

Febreeze works wonders.

Unless you are specifically referring to the Pet Zoflora, Zoflora in any fragrance other than the one specifically labelled for pets is most certainly NOT pet safe!!

It’s okay when dry but when wet it is extremely toxic, it can make dogs and cats incredibly ill if they step on it when wet and/or lick it and I’m fairly sure at least one dog died as a result of its use.

villainousbroodmare · 06/03/2021 17:53

You've got one of the smelliest breeds with lots of sources for bad odours. Heavy ears, and wet lip folds, thick coat as well as the usual teeth and anal glands. You seem to be focusing on deodorizing the house whereas you actually need to concentrate on the source of the smell, which is the dog. Just keep your dog as groomed and frequently washed as possible, brush its teeth and have it sleep on a completely washable bed, not on furniture.

GeidiPrimes · 06/03/2021 17:59

The smell is a bit of a shock to the system isn't it? I haven't learned how to get rid of it, but now it doesn't bother me, (in fact I quite like it now, I find it comforting Blush). So there's always that to look forward to! Grin

ashmts · 06/03/2021 18:59

@BigWolfLittleWolf I said I use it on surfaces, so the kitchen counters etc. These aren't surfaces the dog would get near, wet or dry, and obviously I wouldn't let a dog lick or walk on a surface that had a wet cleaning product on it? As a new dog owner I was worried that the smell would be too much for a dog so specifically looked it up and the Zoflora site says it's safe to use around pets. Yes, only when dry, but I assume other people on MN also have common sense and would check the instructions before use. It is still safe to use in a house where there are pets.

You go nose blind eventually. It's the only thing that's helped here, if I'm honest BlushShock

m0therofdragons · 07/03/2021 12:32

Our wcs only smells when wet but I do wash blankets regularly and have throws on the sofa. His mum and 2 older sisters from the previous litter didn’t smell either so I guess it’s like us humans, some smell more than others.

FictionalCharacter · 07/03/2021 13:15

@Catsrus That sounds amazing - is it the £229 one? They don’t tell you on the website how big it is.
We have had our rescue dog a few months and he really stinks sometimes. The doggy smell is strong and always there, and I haven’t got used to it. At times there’s a much worse smell. The rest of the family aren’t bothered but I have very acute sense of smell, and it makes me feel ill at times. I’m working from home so I’m stuck in the same room as him all day. If this machine did the trick it would change my life!

Catsrus · 07/03/2021 14:09

Yes @FictionalCharacter it's approx 62cm talk 39 wide and 27deep.

If you leave it running in a room, close the door and come back a few hours later you can really smell the difference. It removes odours rather than mask them.

Obviously hard to pull odour from throws and fabric so still need to wash and fabreze - but the way it deals with the litter tray pong is very impressive!

It was a huge investment but worth it for me certainly.
