Gastroenteritis

My 3 year old lab was quite poorly on Tuesday with what the vet has said was a nasty bout of gastroenteritis. He was very dehydrated and ended up on a drip. He was completely lethargic and not at all himself but cape home and went back to the vets the next day so they could check he didn’t need another drip! He didn’t and has slowly been recovering and seems back to his usual bouncy self today. However his poo is still quite loose, sorry for the tmi but it’s like soft chocolate ice cream. He is currently eating boiled chicken and a bit of fruit (he is usually raw fed) the vet has given us a paste to help firm his stools. Do you think I should take the fruit out so he isn’t getting as much fibre? Sorry for the very long post but the vet is not picking up the phone and I’d like to save a trip down if I can. As I say he is 100% normal in himself.

Hi
My ddog has had gastroenteritis a few times now because of all the crap he eats on walks!
The loose stools can hang about for a week or so - don't worry. I would defininitely stick to the boiled chicken and white rice for a couple of days and my vet has told me it is fine to mix in the probiotic paste. Maybe smaller more frequent meals. I would leave the fruit until he is better as this will make stools softer anyway.

Hope he is on the mend soon - they do bounce back fairly quickly.

Personally I would stop raw feeding and get him on kibble or cooked meats and fish. Feed him chappie tins to firm him up. My dog was the same terrible dioreah he was raw fed by rescue. The vet advised chappie to firm him up it worked within 2 days.

I've got a dog with a very sensitive stomach - and she's raw fed - if she gets any kibble or cat food it goes straight through her.

What always works is a combo of cooked white rice & cooked chicken or white fish. If you can bear the farts then hard boiled egg is a great addition for bunging them up.

I usually wait about 4-5 days on the rice mix before moving back to normal food. I've had retrievers for over 30yrs and it seems they are a bit prone to this because they are such scavengers - they can grab and eat crap on a walk in a split second 🤢
