Our lovely 12yr old collie has been diagnosed with mammary tumours, she is due to go in for an operation next week to remove them. Has anyone else been through this or any vets on here who could give us some advice. Specifically what we can feed her to help speed recovery from the operation, and if it is malignant what are the options available? Also an idea of cost of the operation, I didn't ask at the time as was trying to process everything the vet was saying, we do have pet insurance but I am unsure as to how we claim for all of this.

Who is your insurance with? Vets will work with some insurers to claim the money directly from them, so all you would need to do is arrange to pay the excess to the vet as the insurance payment won't cover that bit of the bill. Otherwise, you will need to pay the vet and then claim the mney back from the insurance company via their process.

You can also call the vet tomorrow and ask for a cost estimate. That's a perfectly reasonable and understandable thing to do, so don't feel like it's wrong to do that.

As far as your medical questions go, I cannot help (sorry!) but I hope very much that she is ok Flowers

Our gorgeous rotty had mammary cancer in 2019. 2k bill as she wasn't insured... Took her about 3 months to regain her body condition... She was 10.
We had an amazing year with her. Sadly she got a suspected brain tumour (not unlikely for her breed vet said) and she was pts.
She had surgery and they removed the mass and 11mm of tissue all around. No further treatment was needed..
Fingers crossed for your ddog op.

What kind of surgery is she having? How many lumps? Is she neutered? Has she had chest X-rays? If not then I would recommend X-rays before proceeding with surgery.
Thanks

She is having all the tumours removed im not sure if that is what you mean and no she isn't spayed but they are going to spay her at the same time. She hasn't had chest xrays but she will before the surgery on the morning of it, I assume to see if its spread? Shes absolutely fine in herself at the moment which makes this seem so much harder.😔

That all seems like a good approach. Fingers crossed for her. It's good she's still bright. If there are multiple lumps She'll probably have a mammary strip where they remove all of the breast tissue on one side. They can be quite sore after so definitely ask your vet about pain relief.

Fingers crossed OP, she sounds like a fighter
