Dog sickness & diarrhoea

Sorry for the gross title but for the last 3 days our dog has been sick everyday and had a lot of diarrhoea.

I’m just wondering at what point do I phone a vet or should I be concerned now?

We’ve had him for about 5 months now (he’s 3 years old) and the food we put him on what we got him is still the same good so I don’t think it’s that.

He did go to the groomers for a welfare cut 4 days ago and it was the next day he started being sick- I’m not sure if that’s relevant?

Once he’s been sick, he’s then happy and bouncy and finished off his food so it’s not affecting him.

The diarrhoea is on every walk and is just pure liquid.

He was checked over by a vet when we got him and all seemed ok.

I would have taken him by now, sorry.

He needs to be checked over.

Sorry pressed send to soon. He needs to be checked straight away.

Our pup had diarrhoea and was sick for almost 7 days. I thought it was the raw food he had. We took him to the out of hours vets as I was really worried. I now think it was a bug. Have you rang the vet for advice?

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 22/02/2021 19:43

Bloody hell. 3 days of constant diarrhoea and sickness and you haven’t even called your vets?

Floralchicken · 22/02/2021 19:59

Thanks for the advice- I was told by my friends who also have dogs that sickness is normal which is why I hadn’t phoned the vets, but clearly they are wrong so I’m glad I’ve posted on here!

The sickness isn’t constant, it’s yellow foamy bile about an hour after our morning walk.

The diarrhoea has been on each walk (he only poops on walks twice a day and waits for the walks before the diarrhoea starts ).

DH has just taken the dog on a walk (he was jumpy, bouncy and excited when the word walkies was said) so I’ve got to wait till they get back but I honestly thought by looking online that vets would only be interested if the dog was lethargic/slow/not acting normal.

How long between his meal and his walk?

Floralchicken · 22/02/2021 20:10

He has a bowl of dry always on the floor in the kitchen which he eats when he’s hungry, so he has a bit before his morning walk at 9. (He plays with his ball in the garden before this.)

He has wet food mixed with a bit of dry at 4:30 and evening walk at 6.
Both walks are 40 min-hour long.

This is how what his previous owner fed him so I’ve kept it the same.

Is his food left out overnight? Our ddogs have had episodes of sickness lately.. Followed one ddog to some 'off' dried food under a utility to cupboard.. We have had a few slugs in there... Had a good clean out and hasn't happened since.

Floralchicken · 22/02/2021 20:30

Snowy- yes his dry is left out...that’s interesting, we have had slugs a few years ago but I’ll go down tonight and check they’ve not returned.

Is there a particular reason why you leave food out for him all the time?

Dogs aren't cats and shouldn't really be free-fed. Set mealtimes is best - the moment you have no way of monitoring how much he eats, when he eats it and what's potentially been in his bowl.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 23/02/2021 18:07

Have you spoken to the vets yet?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 23/02/2021 18:24

If any sickness and diarrhoea in dogs here I monitor behaviour, interest in food, how much water is drunk. Give dog bland diet, small portions add in rice/chicken/egg to try and rest their stomach over 24 hours but really if no improvement then vet appointment on second day.

Any toys/socks missing?

Is it something he has done before...one of our GSDs had a "nervous stomach" so any over excitement, major changes and he'd get a squirty bottom, and maybe some bile yellow vomit, so we knew not to worry.

GlitterFairy01 · 24/02/2021 13:51

Hi- I’m the original poster but realised I somehow had two mumsnet accounts so deleted the other.

But to update- I phoned the vets yesterday and they said to monitor him overnight and take him in today if I was still worried, so I took him today (he had more sickness and diarrhoea overnight) and vet said it looks like he’s eaten something he shouldn’t (prob on a walk) so he’s had anti-sickness injection and two different types of tablets (and a paste) to take over the next few days. He’s also on a vet recommended dry mix which will hopefully help get him back to normal.

Thank you all for your advice- as a first time dog owner I need all the help I can get!

ImAncient · 25/02/2021 10:27

How’s your boy doing now. It’ll be the first time of many that he’ll eat something.

GlitterFairy01 · 25/02/2021 14:39

He’s so much better today thank you! The tablets and injection have helped. He’s been wagging his tail all day Smile were wrapping the tablets in plain chicken so he’s wolfing them down!

I do feel so much happier knowing he’s ok, but yes I do think this is something we will have to deal with again at some point!

ImAncient · 25/02/2021 22:26

That’s good he’s improving. It’s like having another child 😁
