Has anyone ever issued / received a receipt when selling/buying a dog?

NC as it has nothing to do with me.

My DMs dog had pups recently. It's the first and only time she has decided to do it as she's recently retired and had the time to provide proper care.
They are not pedigree just lovely little pups.

One of the buyers is first time puppy owner, a lovely lady who is going to a lot of effort to learn all about dog ownership and doing her best to make sure she's prepped for when the pup will go home with her.
She has asked my DM about a receipt of purchase for when she collects as she has read that the pet insurance will need it in the (hopefully extremely unlikely anytime soon) event of death.

My DM is happy to do it but neither of them nor I know what it needs to look like for it to be valid in case it ever needed to be sent through for a claim. So I am hoping I could perhaps get a little bit of insight on here.
Has anyone ever had a receipt / issued a receipt for the sale of a puppy and could someone please advise what it needs to contain?

We got our dog from someone who couldn’t cope with hers anymore and we wrote out a proof of sale contract which she signed, this was for our protection in case she reported him stolen before we changed his microchip details.

It’s sensible to have something in writing to protect all involved.

my friend bought a puppy from a breeder and was given a receipt for the money along with a copy of the contract. It was just a handwritten note acknowledging the amount of money for the pup

I was given a handwritten receipt for my pedigree puppy 6 years ago

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2021 19:04

Yes we had a receipt. It set out name, breed, age, fact that he was vaccinated and vet checked, sellers name and address and telephone number, price paid and our details.

Thinking about it, we were given receipts for our rabbits too from different breeders.

Mine reads along the lines of:
‘Purchasers name’ had bought a ‘sex & breed’ puppy from ‘breeders name’ for ‘price’.
Signed at the bottom by both breeder and purchaser with the date of sale also.

I also give the new owners a more detailed contract but the receipt is purely for insurance purposes.

Hope this helps

Yes, there should be a puppy contract (which acts as proof of transaction) and if KC registered, also the change of ownership form (signed by owners of both dam and sire) so that registration can change to new owner.

You also need to supply vaccination card and microchip information (puppies over 8 weeks should be chipped) so that new owner can transfer that as well

You don't need to do everything the Kennel Club recommends, but here is their example of good practice:

Yeah I was, it just said the price and pedigree of the pup, date of birth. Then we also were given four weeks insurance till we got out own and a copy of that.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 22/02/2021 19:16

Yes, we did.

As well as all his paperwork, certificates etc.

cherryberrylicious · 22/02/2021 19:17

Yes we had a detailed receipt from the breeder

SummerSazz · 22/02/2021 21:12

Yes we had a full KC contract for our purchase.

Mydogisagentleman · 23/02/2021 09:04

Detailed receipt with his name, KC name, purchase price, one month insurance, chip details and vaccination booklet

Loushome · 24/02/2021 22:49

Yes, exactly as PP said plus a list of foods not to give but lists of what would provide good nutrition.

Even 12 years ago I was given a proof of purchase\contract!
