5 mins exercise for each month for puppies

I see and read this all the time but is there really solid evidence behind it?

How do working collie pups and other working dogs limit themselves to this level of exercise? Plenty of wild dogs and wolves don't limit movement in this way. Surely their joints are not dissimilar to pet or working dogs.

I protect her joints but not going up/down stairs and lifting into the car. I have mostly stuck to this for formal walks but my dog has so much energy and is much happier after energetic exercise.

What do others think?

I'm not sure that any man made game can replace the stimulation of sniffing in a field for a gun dog. I also have not seen evidence of dogs that were kept to the 5 minutes per month vs their hip health. I would be interested in that but I have no idea if studies have been done.

I do think we have over bred dogs without considering their health though

Me neither and I would like to see such a study.
But no one expects children to be able to do adult mileage.

And wild wolves bring the food to the babies and their mother, the babies don’t go out on the hunt.
When they hit eight or so weeks they stay in an area with one or two wolves looking after them until they are old enough to join the pack hunting.
They don’t usually go out with the adults until around six months, sometimes older!
So wolves don’t expect their babies to do much exercise either!

Given that baby humans can't walk I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. Why not compare them to baby gazelles or zebras?

Granted.
But wolves share most of their DNA with dogs and they don’t expect their pups to do adult mileage either.
They don’t join the pack on hunts until 6 months or more.

The advice we had from our puppy's breeder was to limit full extension running - not 'none', just 'some'. Other than that, she was fairly chill.

I have working-line gun dogs and the five-minute rule in its pure form would have resulted in a trashed house.

Do dogs with a score of 106 have hip pain?
I think the first thing I would say is a score of 106 will have femoral heads that do not sit in the acetabulum at all - so these x-rays are highly unlikely to be sent for scoring. As a vet I would be saying don't waste your money on scoring get your dog neutered so it can never pass it's genes on. But dogs with hips like this often struggle to get to a year old to go for total hip replacements.
