Bait dogs

pawsies · 18/02/2021 19:59

I'm just wondering how people know their dog was used for bait?

Have they seen dog fighting premises and therefore know their dog was used for baiting?
How common is dog fighting in the UK and why would a dog bred for fighting need to practice on an innocent animal?
Are bait dogs really that common? Whenever I've asked someone for more details they tend to just show pictures and exclaim their dog was definitely a bait dog but why would dog fighters release bait animals into the general public? Surely they'd not want the backlash?

I'm just a bit confused as to how so many rescue dogs have baiting as a history.

Thanks :)

I hate the passive aggressive confused face here, it’s such a shitty non contribution.

There doesn’t seem to be much point in conversing with you.

Verashat · 18/02/2021 21:40

I mean who would denigrate rescuing a dog rather than paying 2k for a puppy farm puppy?

Hell, don’t you dare feel sanctimonious about rescuing lest the local vet judges you.

Not really given your lack of experience, no. You might be better off getting a hamster from pets at home.
JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/02/2021 21:42

Are you ok?

MrsPernicious · 18/02/2021 21:43

@pawsies , maybe Verashat is on your FB feed

Are you alright? Are we going down the mental health route yet?

You spend ‘most of your time in rescue’?

Of course you do.

I haven't judged anyone. I've simply pointed out that buying a dog off gumtree is not rescue. I've stated facts.

If you don't like MN emoticons or actual reality, MN may not be the best place for you

@Veterinari I have been here for 16 years, thank you. Sneering at people who rescue is not something to show off about.

Weird that after 16 years you still seem to be struggling with written comprehension then.
Please do point out exactly where did I sneer?
And how am I showing off?

Verashat · 18/02/2021 21:47

I mean implying that people who rescue have bought from gumtree is really a bit silly isn’t It? Because if you really are a vet, you would know that people don’t that and claim it’s rescue.

Moondust001 · 18/02/2021 21:47

*I find it really sad, that you would post something like that, because what is your motivation?

If you worked in animal rescue (and you don’t) you would realise that there are lots of examples of dogs escaping, being dumped, being raided.

But the sort of person who would deny that it existed is just alien to me and it’s not really worth wafting time on.*

I did not deny dog fighting existed. I am well aware it exists, probably more so than you are. I pointed out that the purpose of bait animals is to be attacked until they are killed. Therefore the vast majority of them neither escape nor are they set free - they die. If you knew anything at all about dog fighting you would know that. And if you worked in animal rescue or had any real knowledge of it, then you would know that too.

Claiming you know something based on a smattering of googled posts is not the same thing as knowledge. There are approaching an average of 2000 reports of dog fighting made every year in the UK. That is the tip of an awful iceberg. £millions are made in illegal gambling in dog fights and ratting out the perpetrators is very dangerous. But to support an "industry" of the size it must be, literally thousands of animals must die as bait. Any few who escape or otherwise survive are rare.

And actually I do happen to know an awful lot about dog rescues as I spend every weekend in one. We have NEVER in its entire history had a surviving bait dog in the centre. Most of these stories are apocryphal.

Guess you know better than the actual clients I have actual conversations with about their dogs then.

Gosh you are clever

JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/02/2021 21:48

Yes I do spend most of my day dealing with rescue dogs.

Verashat · 18/02/2021 21:50

As a vet every other client tells me their new dog is a 'rescue' when I ask a bit more it transpires rescue is a euphemism for rehomed from gumtree

Of course they do. But as we know, anyone can be anything in the wonderland of Mumsnet. ‘Every other’.

No sneering. At all.

Exactly @Moondust001 That's my experience too.

But as Verashat knows more about the origins of my own patients than I do, and can't seem to read any straightforward posts without dramatically misrepresenting them I suspect engaging in a sensible level is futile.

You reason with unreasonable. Probs just best not to feed it.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/02/2021 21:51

Rescue covers all sorts of dogs.

Veterinari · 18/02/2021 21:51

So what’s your aim? You think people are lying? How does that affect you? What a bizarre thing to be bothered by.

Unlike most of the billy bullshitters on here, I do work in rescue and we do get ‘bait’ dogs. It’s not common but we do.

There are a lot of fantasists on this thread.
