Online training classes

Are they worthwhile is my question!

My dog is now 11mo. I've worked very hard with her training, her recall is fantastic and she knows lots of commands. However she has recently started (excited) barking at other dogs while on the lead and I really need to teach her to be calm around other dogs and humans.

Will online classes be of any use to me? When face to face classes restarted last year they were all full up in my area. We are on a few waiting lists for when they reopen.

Will online classes be any help? And can anyone recommend any.

TIA

I'm inclined to try one ... I posted just a couple of days ago about Your cuter than a squirrel or whatever it is called... 25 days for around £30... tempted to post again at the weekend and see whether a few of us fancy doing it together! Just five or ten mins a day and we could all post on here chatting about how we are doin g.... Just a thought....

I've never heard of that, but just looked it up and it sounds quite good for general obedience and ideas for new brain games.

I'll see if I can find any reviews.

Dsis does one and seems pleased with it so must be helping.

There may not be any in your area, but not all dog training is shutdown so it might be worth double checking. Locally we've got someone who trains working and domestic dogs in a field.

I have had to go online and have been amazed at the results.

Online groups are fantastic. We have weekly zoom group classes, the puppy classes in particular are way better on line.

The puppies are more relaxed in their home environment, they learn quicker, the whole family is involved. I can help with situations that arise as I can see the household set up.

I have videos to demo how to teach a behaviour and then have plenty of time to observe the class. The whole family can be involved and the videos are available all the time so pet owners can check them out if confused.

I then have a facebook community group for each class and they post videos and give feedback and are really supportive to each other.

Then once a week I have a yappy hour Q&A session. This is great and gives more guidance if people are stuck or a new issue has come up.

My classes consist of teaching behaviours, problem prevention, field trip ideas in lockdown , socialisation ideas in lockdown , and enrichment task each week.

I think more progress is made on online courses if they are still taught. The self guided courses can be hard to motivate yourself to do but if you are having at least 2 weekly contact with a coach it helps to keep motivation up.

I have done a lot of online puppy training over the last year and I now have a lovely calm dog with good behaviours. I didn’t do the ‘sexier than a squirrel ‘ course as the instructors manner set my teeth on edge Grin i videoed myself and put in on the private groups of another trainer. I found it really helpful as I could see exactly what I was doing and how often the errors were from me not being clear about my cues rather than my dog being disobedient. When we were able to do some group classes in the autumn she was super as she had learnt the behaviours and I just used the other dogs as distractions.

Is anyone near you doing 1:1 in person? Some are around here (cleared by trading standards etc as Covid secure).

PollyRoulson · 20/02/2021 21:55

Unfotunately no 1-1 in person training allowed unless for welfare issues but hopefully on Monday that may change
