Worried my puppy isn't properly vaccinated.

I'd be grateful for some puppy vaccination advice. I collected my puppy at 8 weeks, he had been vaccinated by the breeders vet at 7 weeks with Nobivac DHPPi and L4. I emailed my vet to book him in for the next round of vaccinations and included that information. Puppy had second set of vaccinations 3 weeks later, and when I looked in his heath record book he'd had Vanguard 7 CPV-L and DA-Pi. So he's had an L4 and an L2. I looked online and it states that these brands aren't compatible. The vet reassured me that it is fine to use them together, and I spoke to a couple of other vets who said that although there isn't research to back it up (different drug companies) the risk to the puppy is low. I live in a city and the vet says they've seen 1 case of Leptospirosis in 20 years..But is my puppy covered? Or should I ask the vet to give him another Vanguard L2 in a weeks time, and then let puppy on the ground a week after that? Thanks in advance.

Some people don't vaccinate against leptospirosis at all anymore.

This is a huge area of discussion in the veterinary profession. 20 years ago we just gave the second vaccine with the brand we had, then the companies made a big thing of how there are no studies showing that using two different brands ensures protection (except canigen and nobivac which are the same vaccine made in the same factory different labels stuck on).
So in the U.K. having to practice protection medicine we always use the same brand, in other parts of Europe using different brands is not seen as a problem.
Leptospirosis under WSAVA guidelines Lepto is not a core vaccine that should be given on a risk basis. The incidence in lepto is quite high in the U.K. due to large rat population and lots of waterways. L2 protects against the two most common strains in the uK, L4 protects against the two common strains and another two strains - one which is very common in Europe and one which maybe emerging in the U.K. ( there is difference of opinion on this).

Sorry forgot to add you should not take advice from an unidentifiable strange on the internet, but go back to your own vet to discuss this with them. I am just trying to give you some idea of the history and incidence of disease.

Thanks for your useful comments, I spoke to the vet practice again who said they are confident about the combination of vaccines and that my puppy will be covered. I asked if an insurance company would still provide cover, if vaccines haven't been given according to the manufacturers guidelines but they said they didn't think this would be a problem. I can check with the insurance company. I imagine it could be an issue if a vaccine related issue arose but not if the puppy had an unrelated illness?

It would only potentially be an insurance issue if your puppy caught leptospirosis, but that's very unlikely so try not to worry Smile

There's a lot of debate about the L4 vaccine and potential side effects and lots of vets don't like giving it. However, ours had L4 and has had a booster too, with no issues.

As with everything, there are risks but for us, it was more important he was well covered due to where we live.

I know there’s a lot of discussion about L2 or L4, but I wouldn’t be happy with a mix of the two. I’m not a vet, but I’d lose confidence in someone who mixed vaccines, and would probably find another vet. I’d be nervous about illness, and insurance being void etc, because that’s the sort of person I am. If I questioned my vets judgment, I’d rather find a new one.

Everything I have read or heard has been about vets having to restart vaccinations if they do different ones than the breeder. So I definitely wouldn’t be happy with mixing.
