Third eyelid covering half the eyeball?

My old boy is a boxer x rottie, he's 11, and the vet suspected he had a stroke end of 2019. The last couple of days his eyeball has looked odd, a quick chat with a veterinary nurse over the phone has suggested it's a third eyelid? He has an video appointment booked in today at 5, but it's playing on my mind, to me it doesn't seem like a typical third eyelid, I guess I'm just after some reassurance really that he's ok, and it's normal and he's not going blind? Added pictures of my beautiful boy

It looks like the third eyelid to me. (Not an expert).

CuntasarusRex · 16/02/2021 14:23

Thank you. Is it normal/typical for it to cover half the eyeball and not go away? We've not had this issue with him before so this is new for meBlush

It’s definitely the third eyelid. My old dog’s went like that immediately after his stroke, then slowly resolved.

With your boy’s history I think I would want him seen and examined, particularly a neuro exam, rather than waiting for a video appointment.

Yeah that’s the third eyelid and no, it’s not normal as in it doesn’t happen for no reason.

But, there are a variety of things it could be - things like intestinal viruses can weirdly (to me anyway it’s weird, lol) cause it for instance, it’s not necessarily eye or brain related...

It does mean he’s probably unwell though.

Thank you, poor boy, I've changed it to a face to face appointment so we're off to take him now

Good luck.

Let us know what they say.

Ok so, the vet has said he's got horners syndrome, but apparently he's lost a lot of weight since his last visit and his head tilt has got worse so now they want him in for blood and urine tests

Glad they are following it up. If it is Horners it may be idiopathic, but I would want further checks to see if they can find a cause first.

I was going to ask about the head tilt, but thought it may just have been the angle of the photo.

I hope they can get to the bottom of it quickly for your lovely boy.

Ever since his funny turn he's had a head tilt but it just seems to have gotten worse bless him. His eye is sunken in, he's losing his fur, but he's so so happy in himself. I'm guna get him booked in ASAP for his bloods and tests though. Fingers crossed he's ok.

Here's a pic of him before he got poorly

Poor lad. My boy (now 15 years old) has a slight tilt after a few vestibular episodes, but we think he might have something else going on, as he’s having some new, worrying symptoms. He’s still a happy boy too though.

Your boy is beautiful. His face is very similar to the Boxer x GSD we had years ago. (I’ll attach a photo of him.)

I’ll keep everything crossed for your boy.

Oh he's gorgeous, they do look very similar.
Oh no I hope your boy is ok, they do like to worry usCake

OP - what a smiley, happy looking dog.
My old dog has a tilt following several vestibular episodes too. Also getting deaf and rather blind. Still doing ok and vets are happy with her health (apart from her teeth!) But she's not robust enough for anathesia so can't do much about the teeth.
