Dog Fighting

I’d didn’t think this still existed, until I heard someone mentioned that they are worried a number of lockdown puppies will eventually be used for bait. Were they being serious. They are convinced still goes on. What do you think. Absolutely horrendous if true.

Well dog fighting definitely still exists, but I don’t see lockdown puppies being used as bait personally, not at over £1,000 each

Yes, it definitely exists.

It's not the first owners of the puppies who will use them for fighting - the concern is once the owners go back to work, people will want to get rid of the pups quickly, sell them online with no checks, and the new "owners" will go onto use them as bait or for breeding.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 14/02/2021 20:21

Yes it definitely still goes on. So many dogs are stolen for precisely this purpose. And yes, lockdown puppies that owners eventually realise they can’t look after will be sold for pennies or given away on gumtree and picked up by people using them for dog bait.

Ohtheplacesyougo · 15/02/2021 06:44

Mmm, well that’s all very sad.
I’m amazed people are still interested in such things.

I really hope people carry on keeping their puppies, adjusting their lives accordingly. Thanks.

It’s still exist but it’s not as prevalent as most people think.
It’s actually quite rare that dogs are stolen from gardens to be used as bait for example, when it’s much easier/less risky for them to just get a FTAGH dog off of Scumtree.

Plus, it isn’t actually any use to them to chuck a defenceless small puppy in, they want a dog that will put up a bit of a fight to ‘train’ the other dog.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 15/02/2021 15:22

There are people who travel regularly from Wales to Ireland to steal dogs. Despite having been prosecuted for it before and having their pictures circulated widely. They still travel. It’s not rare. They wouldn’t travel, and take that risk if it wasn’t worth their while.

It's like hare coursing, it happens more than one would hope. It's the volume of gambling money associated with those activities that keep people doing it.

Moondust001 · 15/02/2021 15:39

Actually, it's a lot more prevalent than most people think! Dog fighting is carried out in secret, and with links to underworld gambling it is highly lucrative and very dangerous for people to get involved in "telling tales". Yet there are as many as 1,500 - 2,000 reports of dog fighting. It is thought those reports represent the tip of the iceberg, and is increasing, not decreasing.

Moondust001 · 15/02/2021 15:40

Sorry that should read 1,500 - 2,000 reports of dog fighting per year

The dogs involved are more likely to have been stolen than bought
Ohtheplacesyougo · 15/02/2021 19:05

Mmm, so all in all a fairly rotten nasty world exists. It’s barbaric. I read a bit online today and is sickening.

But then I was generally amazed at how buying puppies is also like entering into a parallel universe. To me it feels similar to human trafficking and drug dealing etc. Basically, organised crime on a mass scale, with the ability to get away with it....

What really bugs me, is people behave like that when they have obviously something seriously wrong with them, and then the press / population get all het up when someone says something a bit unPC - it’s a joke!!

No, not at all. Stolen dogs might be used to teach training fighters but you can't begin to appreciate how much money is involved in the underworld where this goes on. Not too long ago, and not too far away from me, someone was busted for having fighting dogs. They kept Cane Corso and the two males were busy, when not fighting, producing pups that were selling at - and I joke not - £10,000 each because of the "success" of the males as fighting dogs.

People who praise the Cane Corso as balanced family friendly dogs (which any dog can be if raised right) forget what they were originally bred to do. Along with the Neopolitan Mastiff, they are descended from the war dogs of the Roman legions. They are strong and can kill a human adult without any trouble at all.

When you are spending £10,000 on a puppy, given that the majority of those will not survive their first fights, think about the amount of money to be made from fighting that makes spending that on a pup worthwhile.
