What are your dog’s favourite toys and chews?

Just wondering what sort and how many toys to get for incoming 4-yr old rescue. About the same size and build as a border collie. The choice is a bit overwhelming!

And what about things like chews? Do they have just one that lasts for ages or multiple? Don’t really know where to start...

Soft toys, figure of 8 tug toy, but her favourite are antlers and also buffalo horn.

Good idea for a thread. Dogs are all different though, friends have recommended toys that their dogs loved and mine was not interested, and vice versa. So I'd get a variety and see what yours prefers.

Mine (5.5 month cocker spaniel) has some soft toys, some rope toys, balls and harder chew toys. Her absolute favourite toy in the world is this:

www.amazon.co.uk/Chiwava-Squeaky-Latex-Standing-Interactive/dp/B07VWTPTJB/ref=asc_df_B07VWTPTJB/?hvlocphy=1007381&hvlocphy=1007381&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvnetw=g&hvadid=394280480848&hvadid=394280480848&hvpone&hvpone&hvlocint&hvlocint&ref&hvpos&hvpos&hvdev=m&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-810354473256&hvtargid=pla-810354473256&hvrand=18303957443895886062&hvrand=18303957443895886062&adgrpid=82722463620

It's very squeaky and annoying and she loves it.

Another big hit has been

www.lordsandlabradors.co.uk/products/antos-natural-root-chew-medium?utm_term=&utm_campaign=Smart+Shopping+(Click+Consult)&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=6378180508&hsa_cam=8904013322&hsa_grp=90758132558&hsa_ad=411681839944&hsa_src=u&hsa_tgt=pla-846029941420&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=CjwKCAiAsaOBBhA4EiwAo0_AnOYA6TgJDwp1-GOeUDltT1AZnlQFwdOyajUUdHtlX5fCkz7zJng4eRoCIDYQAvD_BwE

Edible chew-wise, she likes cow and rabbit ears. We gave her a pizzle stick the other day and she loved it. These tend to only last one chewing session (although if we get the cow ear with hair it lasts a lot longer but she's not as keen). Things like Yakker chews last weeks.

The beauty of only having 1 ddog is toys last and can be left lying around!! Rotate often though so ddog won't get bored!! Nerf do ddog toys. Very hard wearing. Husky can't destroy in less than 10 mins! Our ddogs get raw veg snacks! A cabbage heart is a welcome treat here! As is a huge carrot or broccoli stalk!

incinemasnow · 14/02/2021 12:07

Ddog still loves the squeaky soft toys we got when we first got him. He's got some nylabone chews & lots of rope toys. He's also happy with a yogurt pot, cardboard box or tube & vegetables. Be wary about letting them have your old shoes as toys as they can't tell the difference between your old or new shoes Smile

GeidiPrimes · 14/02/2021 12:10

Mine likes animal horns and dried bunny ears and chickens feet to chew on (it's like living with Ed Gein, all the body parts strewn around the house) He can demolish a yakker in a couple of hours. He's a bodeguero, so similar size to a collie.

Toys - he's destructive so things like the Kong jumbler - ie. anything made of tough plastic or he just eats it, (even nylabones). Licky mats are useful.

GeidiPrimes · 14/02/2021 12:13

Also pizzles, forgot about those. The bleached hide isn't so good for them, and they can choke if given it in shapes, like those "bones" with knots at each end.

Inextremis · 14/02/2021 12:22

After many, many years of research, and many many £££s spent on tennis balls of various configurations, I can now tell you that the very best, longest-lasting and retention of squeak balls are those of the Chuckit brand :) A Kong Squeak ball has a squeak life of approximately 30 minutes, a Chuckit ball lasts - literally - for years, squeak intact. Your dog may be more gentle on balls than my two hooligans, but a Chuckit ball remains the best investment, I think.

Pedigree Minis (cheese or regular flavour) are their favourite treats. We don't do chews because they're not always safe, but you can't beat a proper thick marrow bone from the butchers.

CityDweller · 14/02/2021 13:34

Ok, thanks, sounds like chews are a bit of a minefield! Hadn’t realised they were potentially unsafe.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/02/2021 13:37

The toy the other dog has!

They seem to like the silicone with spiky bits type.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 14/02/2021 13:57

I honestly wouldn't spend much until you have your dog home and you know what he/she likes.

I don't buy toys for mine as he just chews them and eats them. He has a tug toy but is only allowed that if we're there to play with him, and we take chuck-it balls on walks, but again it's supervised play.

Otherwise I just buy him natural chews - he has things like raw marrowbone, pizzles, pigs ears, trachea, lambs feet, stuffed cows hooves and that kind of thing. They're all natural and things he's allowed to eat - so they won't make him unwell or cause a blockage anywhere.

Dog toys/chews are such a minefield and tbh there is a lot of unsafe stuff for sale. Manufacturers get away with it by saying "pets must be supervised at all times while playing/eating" but it only takes seconds for them to rip a toy up and swallow it.

knightsinwhitesatin · 14/02/2021 14:01

JR pet products do good natural chew treats. They are more expensive but I think worth it. We get our dog lamb braids as a treat. They don’t tend to last too long, but he has a good chew for a while.

MaryIsA · 14/02/2021 14:28

Yakkers, she chews away on it for longer than most things.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 14/02/2021 14:33

Mine love WoofBrushes from Lily’s Kitchen.
They also like soft toys but I tend to get the roadkill ones without stuffing as they find a weak spot and rip the stuffing out of them otherwise.
Kong stuff- a-balls are a huge hit and I put broken up chicken wings, beef chunks etc in them (in the garden!)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/02/2021 14:50

A classic kong toy you can stuff with treats is a good start. You can also fill with banana or stock and freeze in summer, it is a great toy.

Mine likes cuddly toys and kong make nice teddies that last longer. Kong sqeaker balls in particular the rugby ball shape is his favourite.

I only give mine natural treats so no rawhide, bleached rubbish. Only buffalo horn, antler, pigs ears, chickens feet, sprats, rabbits ears, all go do well.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/02/2021 14:51

Oh and greenies teeth cleaners, tried lilys woofbrushes and they didn’t go down as well as greenies.

CityDweller · 14/02/2021 20:10

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll get just one or two toys (was already planning on getting a Kong) and a few safe chews for now so we can see what he likes.
