My dog won't pee in the garden! (Cute dog photo)

I have had Charlie (a German hunting terrier/border collie/shepherd mix) since just before Christmas, he is a 9 month old rescue, ex street dog. He will not wee or poo in my garden! I am taking him for walks 4 times a day so he will do a wee because he simply won't go in the garden, but thankfully has no issues during our walk. Dh will be going back to the office at some point so I would like to be able to take him in the garden for a wee in the morning rather than rush getting 2year old and 5 year old up and ready to go out. Any advice? Thank you :)

One way is to get other dogs to wee in your garden. Then he is more likely to wee on that. Do you know any friendly neighbours with dogs to help you out?

DobbleDobble · 12/02/2021 19:14

He will go to the toilet when desperate. I have a cocker spaniel whose a bugger for doing this.... but he will go when he realises I’m not going to get ready to go out till later in day .
He then proceeds to do a long wee as soon as out the door too!
But you cannot keep getting the children up to work round this dog on early cold mornings.
I have no words of wisdom other than try to settle him into how you want it all to run, rather than around him.

Grim but could you use some of his own wee - catch it in tupperware on a walk and then put it on the garden to give him the idea? Is there a particular type of surface he prefers to pee on that he finds on walks but not in the garden?

He's decided to be too well house trained, and thinks that the garden is his territory. You don't pee on your own territory, right? I agree with PP that another dog peeing here will help, and also, desperation.
Does he ask to go out when he needs to pee? If so, only let him in the garden. Make sure he knows he's done the right thing afterwards, too. He's going to feel like you'd feel if you'd peed in a chair... 'Surely I'm not meant to be doing this??'

He's lovely looking, by the way.

I used to make a cuppa and sit out with dpuppy!! Loads of Ott praise when she did a wee!! Even now at 15 months if I say have a wee she will squeeze one out!!

My dog is a bugger for this. We've had builders in the garden lately and so he was only able to go in the yard (other than on walks). He goes eventually, I just leave the door open and peep. Also a biscuit bribe on the kitchen top helps 'this is yours put biscuit visible on kitchen top but you must go for wee first' on repeat. Works in the end.

Can you literally take him out the gate, to nearest verge, on lead, and say do a wee. Give him a treat and go back indoors.
Kids stay indoors, no different to popping something in the wheelie bin?

JackieeWeaver · 12/02/2021 19:43

Not helpful - but how handsome is he?!! Gorge dog.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 12/02/2021 20:06

I would refuse to go anywhere until he's peed in the garden. So ideally first thing in the morning (when he's held it all night), go out with him and literally sit there until he pees.

You need to stay out with him to praise/reward when he goes, so you can't just stick him in the garden on his own.

Girlintheframe · 13/02/2021 08:24

Could it be that he just doesn't desperately need 1st thing?

Ours gets up around 6.30 but won't go out for a wee until at least 9.30/10 that's despite not having been since 7.30 the night before and having access to our garden.
If I took him out for a walk 1st thing he would definitely pee, in fact all walks involve around 20 pees mainly because he can smell where other dogs have peed!
