Spaying and temperament

Did you notice any effect on your bitches temperament after spaying? Are there any documented studies on its effect? Does it vary per breed?

Trying to work out the best time to get our bitch done, she's no bother in season but I don't want a dog convalescing whilst children are off school.

Small terrier bitch. Tends to not like other bitches.

I have 2 small terrier bitches and didn't notice any difference in temperament at all after spaying. I think the risk of mammary cancer is reduced significantly up until the third season so best to do it before then. And of course any time is good for the prevention of pyometra which is my worst nightmare.

Pyometra is my fear, a friend's bitch had it and it was touch and go.

Yeah really scary and totally preventable

My lab was spayed before Christmas she was 19 months and should have been spayed at 13 months after her first season but it was cancelled due to Covid and then by the time the vets reopened for non emergency operations . She had gone into season again so we had to wait. She has not noticeably changed in temperament since being spayed maybe a bit calmer but that could be her growing up . She was spayed laparoscopically and I would definitely recommend this as opposed to the traditionally spay our old bitch had done. Much easier on her and much quicker recovering, hope that helps .

I worried about spaying mine.. she is dog friendly to most, but scared of a few breeds larger than her (and she's not a small dog!) and during her 2nd season she became dog reactive out of the blue...it was awful.. she hated everyone!

So I reluctantly decided to spay her after that (was going to wait til she was 3 as per breed recommendation) and then worried it would set her back.

It didn't..and in fact she is mroe chilled now ..most of the time :) (she has her quirks but they aren't worrying ones) so I'm glad I bit the bullet.

I do recommend laporoscopic spay tho... costs a bit more than traditional but she was up and running by day 3.. two tiny stitches, no restrictions, and MUCH less invasive.

I want an ovary sparing spay but it seems its only being done abroad. I am also interested in keyhole surgery. I have found a change in temperament in previous bitches (not for the better) but since I have been waiting until after their second season I think its less noticeable.

No change in temperament here but she was spayed late, can’t remember the exact age.
Think she was around 4.
I think sometimes when people think their dog’s temperament changed after neutering it hasn’t, it’s just that they are growing up and settling into their adult temperament.
