Due to bring home our Patterdale puppy soon so I'm scouting around for insurance ...

Any recommended companies? Any to avoid?

Anything in particular I should ensure is included ? What price per month is average ?

Insurance is a personal thing because it's all about providing the cushion you need, just in case - and what you need might vary depending on how much risk you want to carry yourself and/or your access to savings if you get a very high or longterm bill.

I did not want to carry the risk of paying out for long term or large medicial bills so I'd got the highest level of cover I could, thinking that it would be those types of bills that would cripple me. I am currently in a position of having paid around £1100 on insurance premiums but having claimed £10,500. I am forever grateful I chose the maximum insurance level I could find.

For the same reason, I'd look for something that covers issues for life, rather than have a limit per condition. That way, cost will not be a factor in choosing what healthcare options are best for the dog.

Patterdales tend to be pretty healthy dogs but I've also had a similar terrier that required several £000s surgery following a horrendous dog attack, so healthy doesn't mean no risk.

PetPlan remains a very popular choice (and pays the vet direct so you don't have to find the cash and then claim it back) with a high reputation.

BoughtByMany also seems to be becoming very well-regarded and has high cover levels.

AnimalFriends continually gets slated on forums.

Bought by Many have been good for my cats and reasonably priced with high cover levels. Look for a lifetime plan so that if you claim you are still covered the next year for that condition

Agree - PetPlan is the reliable choice, and if your cash flow is tight is the one vets are most likely to agree to deal with directly.

BoughtByMany is newer, but has grown a good reputation already

The thing to look for is a lifetime policy, with ceilings that reset annually. Your premiums might go up as your dog ages, but you will never be refused cover. Check the excess and any exclusions (there may be lower or non-resetting limits on complementary therapies and behaviourists). And get a high level of cover - I'd say at least £7k

I’m planning on getting Bought by Many’s lifetime cover at the highest level for incoming rescue. It’s about £35 a month for. 4yr old mongrel. Their mid-level cover was about £27. I figured for an extra few ££ I’d rather have the extra 5k worth of annual cover.

We have just taken out insurance with Bought by Many. We knew it would be expensive regardless of which insurance company we went with due to the breed of dog.

Make sure you get lifetime cover.

We have Tesco lifetime with the highest level of cover available. Ours is 3 years old and we pay £36 per month.

We went with boughtbymany and best decision ever because it gives you free access to FirstVet, and that service is absurdly amazing.

Used them twice and so much better than our local vet. You can get an appointment within 15 mns of signing in, video chat with a vet for 10mns or more who has no gained interest in sending for blood tests, scans etc...and you get a full written report and advice by email a few hours later.

Absolutely not absurdly Grin
