Older dog peeing more often

Our wire haired fox terrier is 12 and recently has started to need to wee more often. He doesn't get 'caught short' and always 'asks' to go out [although occasionally we miss the signs or ignore it!].

Very occasionally we find he's wee'd in his bed overnight, but 99% of the time it's at the weekend when we tend to sleep in and no-one gets him up early enough [there are 5 adults in my household].

I think it's just his age but DH thinks it's diabetes. [he googles a lot]

Any advice on what might be up? I'm happy to take him to the vet, but as a more mature person myself, who wees a lot more than she used to [and isn't diabetic], I'm erring on the 'age' diagnosis.

You need to get him checked out.
It could be age incontinance but he isn’t all that old for a medium sized terrier breed. It could equally be a UTI, diabetes or a kidney problem.

I have to say I would be a little worried if this was my dog.
I would be thinking possible kidney disease or diabetes before age.
I am quite a hyperchondriac though Blush

You need to take him to the vet.

I'll book him for a visit and update you. Won't do any harm.

Had a phone consultation last week and took him in this morning with a urine sample.

No diagnosis yet - blood test results in next day or so, but vet thinks either diabetes or (more likely) cushings syndrome, which has similar symptoms plus one or two other odd symptoms that we hadn't really noticed until the vet asked. Then you sort of think 'oh, yes he does do that'.

Weight gain, thirsty, frequent weeing, seeming tired and panting a lot for no reason.

Update - all tests negative, so we have to assume he's just getting older?!
