Puppy prices and people breeding to cash in or ‘get their money back’

Was at the park the other day and I overheard this conversation between two ‘Oodle’ owners (I think they were Labradoodles).

‘So are you going to breed you girl, you could get $5k per puppy’ ‘I’m not sure if I want to put her through it or not but at 5k per puppy it’s pretty hard to pass up.’

I get that times are tough for some people but these women didn’t look hard up but still only saw the money they could get.

I’m in Australia but from what I’ve read puppy prices in the UK are even more insane. Just because you paid an overinflated price for your crossbreed doesn’t mean you should try and earn it back again.

It drives me insane, not only that, but people who gave bought a puppy over lockdown and now surprise surprise realised things are working...

Rather than hold their hands up and realise they’ve made a dreadful mistake and hand the dog over to the Dogs Trust to be rehomed to the right family, stick it on pets4home

“Yeah circumstances have changed, so I want the dog to go to a 5* forever home” (like yours was supposed to be you mean?) but I still want all my cash back so it’s £3.5k”

Yeah you clearly want it to go to a good home, but actually you just want a fucking refund

MabelMoo23 · 07/02/2021 09:25

Sorry fat fingers, realised things AREN’T working

Dogs Trust are kennels, not foster homes.
Kennels are not nice places at all and if the endless threads on here are anything to go by, rescues are way, way too picky so the poor dog would be stuck in there a very long time!
Provided the new home is decent a dog is far better off being rehomed straight into another family home rather than kennels.

I rehomed our boy from my hairdresser and it very much was a case of him going to a loving forever home. Rescue centres are full to the brim however they have such stringent rules that they are limiting how many could be rehomed. I didn't meet the criteria namely because I have children.
Took our boy to the vets this week and had a convo with the vet about this as he was looking at rescue centres but didn't meet the criteria Shock
Whilst there two chaps came in with a crate stuffed with tiny puppies clearly irresponsible breeders as they told the receptionist that they were two pups short as their friend wanted two, receptionist was impressed as they'd not been vet checked.
Lots of people just see £ signs when they have puppies. I've been stopped on the street to ask if I'll stud mine as they see the monetary potential.

NoProblem123 · 07/02/2021 09:56

It’s exactly the same with horses.
They buy a filly and their first intention is to breed a foal off it to ‘get their money back’.

People who breed to cash in, and then sell on their bitch too are just the lowest.
My shihtzu was pts yesterday and I never bred with her as she was just to precious to risk.

somethinginthewater · 07/02/2021 09:57

This is the reason female pups sell for more - it's assumed you will breed to get your money back. Despicable.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/02/2021 10:04

I recently saw an advert on Pets for Homes which broke my heart - a Labrador who had had 3 litters but now they "didn't have the time she deserved". More like something awful has happened to the poor thing and she can't breed anymore.... 😡😢

Darklane · 07/02/2021 10:20

Probably because, having had three litters, she’s almost reached the current limit that the Kennel Club will allow to be registered from any one bitch. The limit is four. It used to be six. Or she’s seven years old & you need special permission to register any puppies from a bitch that has reached eight years of age. Dreadful people, poor bitch.

somethinginthewater · 07/02/2021 11:28

Exactly. They can't register her litters anymore but have kept one or two of the puppies to breed from.

AledsiPad · 07/02/2021 14:05

I have a doodle pup. She is a girl, but we wanted a boy to be honest, then we fell in love with her when we visited the litter. I realise I could "get my money back" for her, and then some. However, I am not a breeder. I don't have the slightest idea what on earth to do to breed puppies, and I'm not about to start now. We bought her as a much loved family member, not a cash cow! She'll be spayed as soon as is recommended by her vet, and loved for her whole life. Yes, she cost a fortune, but she was worth it!

I don't like this practice of breeding purely 'to get our money.' It feels so uncomfortable and, honestly, grubby.

The price of puppies at the moment makes me sad. We would love a puppy and had been planning on getting one this year. However the pandemic happened and now we are priced out of the market. We even work in the pet trade so us getting a dog was a natural thing for us and we had waited until it was something we could devote the time too.

We have small children so don’t seem to be able to rescue and I keep seeing all these people selling lockdown puppies and wanting the same over inflated price they paid for them.

LimitIsUp · 07/02/2021 18:21

Pretty much confirms my prejudices we 'oodle' owners

LimitIsUp · 07/02/2021 18:21

'Re' not 'we'

A lot of the big rescues, including Dogs Trust, use foster care and kennels depending on the individual dogs. Have you been to a DT centre recently? They're PLUSH, the kennels have underfloor heating and air conditioning, most of the dogs were so relaxed they were fast asleep.

All the big rescues are struggling at the moment as they literally can't rehome dogs quick enough. All the easy dogs are rehomed within the week. Even dogs which previously may have stuck around a lot longer due to behavioural or veterinary issues are flying out the door.

Some kennels are even empty, because people are selling their dogs instead of signing them over :(

bombaychef · 08/02/2021 23:23

I've seen a lot of ads selling dogs on as if they were a handbag people are bored with. I also know some one who was a total victim of a puppy farm scam. All so so sad
