Best raw food for a puppy

All being well, we are getting a cocker spaniel pup in April. The breeder uses Natural Instinct raw food, and I plan to continue with a raw food diet. However one of my friends was saying that Natural Instinct is a bit annoying to use, because you have to defrost the whole block, rather than it coming in separate "nuggets" so that you can just defrost what you need. Can anyone recommend a raw food that comes like this?

Also, I get a chicken once a week with my veg box and it comes with the giblets in a bag. Sometimes I use them to make stock but often I just chuck them out. Would I be able to use them to supplement the pup's diet? If so, would I just weigh it and take it out of the daily allowance?

Finally, are there specific treats that fit well with raw feeding? I was planning to use tiny cubes of cheese...

Naturaw all the way!

www.naturaw.co.uk/product/puppy-500g/

I’ve got 2 dogs who have been on it since puppies and they are in great condition

The food is really high quality and it’s also the only company that uses biodegradable packs

All the others use black plastic trays which are almost impossible to recycle

And to answer your other questions,
One block of food should last about 3 meals, and defrosts over night left in the sink, so it’s no hassle

I’ve tried the natures menu cubes, and they go all squishy and mushy so you end up scooping bits of raw food out of the bottom of the bag

Much easier to have a tub where you fork out the amount you need and put the lid back on

For treats, I use fish skins, bits of cheese and pooch and mutt treats.
The latter aren’t strictly raw but they are high quality and fine as training treats.

Thank you so much! DH occasionally has a chunter about the environmental impact of a dog, so recyclable packaging is definitely an advantage.

The packaging is a cardboard sleeve which goes in the recycling and then a card tray which is made out of (I think!) sugar cane pulp, and goes in the main bin. It takes the same time to biodegrade as a banana skin
Miles better than brittle plastic tubs going into landfill

Paleoridge also use cardboard.

My golden ret was a fussy pup - didn't like finely minced raw - was weaned onto Nutriment by her breeder but started rejecting it. PR has coarser chunks which she preferred and I've pretty much stuck with it.

I've got three dogs and we get through a bit more than a kilo a day - so rather than open a second pack I add a few Country Hunter nuggets to make up the weight in one of the meals - frozen - the dogs all like the crunch!

I thoroughly recommend Paleoridge - small ethical family firm, they also arrange collection of the wool used to insulate the boxes and give you a small credit to your account.

We use Luna and me and I love that it comes in burgers so you defrost 3 at a time (or more). Our pup has 1 in the morning and two for tea (he’s on 2 meals now). It’s made in Dorset and we’re very impressed with price and service etc and pup likes it.

I can't really advise on diet (as I don't feed raw) but suitable treats are dried fish skins (you can buy big bags of little cubes) and other dehydrated meat pieces (brands such as Thrive, and many others available)

I've just changed to raw... and recommend getting a selection from somewhere like Stef's Pet Pantry - link below - so that you can see which you and your dog like. There seems to be a huge variety of textures, qualities, ethical issues and recycling. The Dogs Butcher and Paleo Ridge seem to come out tops regarding ethical, high-quality, etc.

For treats, I use good quality kibble that's almost all protein (Orijin - fish one especially delicious!) and cheese. Nature's Menu do nice soft ones, 99% meat, which our puppy trainer always used - delicious and can be torn into smaller bits. Kibbles great as you do get through a lot of treats when training - I remember using a whole meal's worth when he was tiny, so wanted him to be getting the nutrition while being less expensive than endless treats!

Good luck - how exciting!

We use Primal Raw for all of our food, can't fault these guys at all! Massive range of products from Bulmer's, Just Natural, Albion, Dougies, Kiezebrink, Paleo Ridge and much more.

We're lucky enough to live in their freezer van delivery run, but on the odd occasion we have had to use their nationwide courier service, DPD have been fantastic

Great value for money with some awesome bulk deals, what's more if we spend over £150 we don't pay a penny for delivery
