So exdp and I have been separated 3 years.

He has a labrador that he has never really taken care of. When I met him the dog was a bag of bones, he used physical punishment and rarely took him out for walks. I took on care of the dog, stopped the physical punishment and looked after him along with my own dog. After we split up I kept the dog for 2 years until ex had suitable accommodation to take his dog back.

He's had him back 1 year now and the poor dog is suffering once more Sad He's not fed properly, never walked and left alone from morning to night. He's 12 years old, has stiffness in his joints, bad teeth, a large abscess on his bottom, overgrown claws and just looks miserable.

I've brought him home with me, he's been fed, washed, claws clipped, loved and taken for a walk. I do love him and know the right thing to do is not to give him back, but he's not an easy dog to live with! He's stubborn, food obsessed, hairy, smelly and constantly in the way. Despite all that, I'm pretty sure I'm not giving him back.

Please give me any tips you can on training him. He doesn't listen at all! He's only walked on lead as he's aggressive with other dogs so it's more help with stopping the bin raiding, sock eating, refusal to wait on the mat with muddy paws, etc.

Also I can see some potential health problems emerging so need to organise some pet insurance but who will cover him with existing problems?

(Also, I know I should have run a mile from a man that was abusive to animals. He's not from UK and the culture he's from doesn't treat animals well. I now know that's no excuse and lesson learned)

They’re both gorgeous.Sorry,I have no advice but you’re lovely for taking him in and I hope you all have a great time together.

winterchills · 03/02/2021 20:14

He's so gorgeous 🥲your doing the right thing for the poor thing x

harriethoyle · 03/02/2021 20:21

@Mandalakia I just insured my 11.5 year old rescue dogs with bought by many. My parents dog's pre existing condition was also covered by them. Look online for their geriatric policies.

Thank you for saving this pupper, who looks like the goodest of good boys Flowers

This thread made me teary. Op you are brilliant.

I have a 'Binnie pig' amazing name! Too. A baby cupboard lock on the top and empty pop bottles full of water in the bottom stopped him opening or tipping. He's forgotten about the bin now.

This is the lock for the bin. It's amazing I've sold dozens for Lindam over the years!!

nevernotstruggling · 03/02/2021 21:00

What's his name op we all love him already

Mandalakia · 04/02/2021 09:22

His name is Jose! He's a really good boy. When I was clipping his nails he sat perfectly looking at me with his big sad eyes. Total opposite to my Spaniel that needs to be drugged, muzzled and restrained for a manicure and still manages to give a mean headbutt if you're not careful.

He’s a beaut OP. Well done. Xx

Mandalakia · 04/02/2021 11:32

Apologies for the photos. This is the abscess on his bottom. It's just above the anus. Any ideas what it could be?

I have a telephone consultation with the PDSA booked. They are only seeing emergency cases in person.

OP posts:
HoldontoOneMoreDay · 04/02/2021 11:46

OMG OP don't feel bad about using the PDSA - you've done the right thing, the dog is beautiful, but as you know older dogs can cost £££.

I've got one of those Simple Human bins, they work a treat but they aren't wholly dog proof - mine can break in to it but he only does it if he's left alone in the house. We just move it onto the back step if we're going to be out. It's still totally worth getting but just to let you know you do still have to keep half an eye on it.

My old lab had something similar. It was a benign cust. My vet just removed it and sent it off to be checked just in case it was cancerous. Wasn’t a big thing.

Beauty boy, what a lovely thing you’re doing OP

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 04/02/2021 12:46

Lucky Jose to have you. I have an oldie rescue and he makes my heart melt. He is insured with PetPlan so I would give them a try.

Mandalakia · 04/02/2021 15:27

Kittykat93 · 04/02/2021 15:33

Oh he is beautiful. He might not be easy but he doesn't deserve to live a life of abuse, absolutely breaks my heart. Thank you for taking him in. Lol at the bin 5though Grin

Mandalakia · 04/02/2021 15:56

I was rushing to pick up ds from nursery and forgot to close the bin in the bathroom! 🤦‍♀️

Spudlet · 04/02/2021 16:19

‘I have checked the rubbish for you Mummy, to make sure you didn’t get the recycling mixed up. You’re welcome’ Grin

(I also have a bin diver. He can open every bin out there. Child locks are the only things that stop him!)

harriethoyle · 04/02/2021 16:22

😂😂🙈🙈

Spudlet · 04/02/2021 16:26

I also crate trained ddog after he decided to rifle through my handbag 😱. I’d only gone to the loo. It’s the best thing I ever did, tbh.

50shadesoflunacy · 04/02/2021 16:31

Aw he is a handsome boy. You can see his love for you OP

SionnachRua · 04/02/2021 16:36

What a gorgeous dog! So glad you've taken and he'll live out his golden years in a happy home.

Mandalakia · 04/02/2021 16:56

Thank you all for your kind words.

When I came in and found the bin, he was trembling in the corner Sad I said "Oh dear, what did I forget to do?" and he came bounding over for cuddles. He really can't help himself, bless him.

Spoke to the vet and sent photos of his bottom, teeth and a short video of him walking. The vet said as he is old and doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain or discomfort then it's best to keep a close eye on him. Anesthetic would be very dangerous and a last resort at his age. He recommended Yumove joint care supplements and gentle exercise for now.

Our eldest Lab is 12 years old. She had one eye removed a couple of years ago due to a benign tumour. We haven't restarted her insurance this year as it really wouldn't be fair to put her through traumatic surgery.
We now have a separate account for her and put the monthly 'insurance money' in there for the small vet fees.

Historydweeb · 05/02/2021 11:34

He is a lovely boy. I'm so glad you've taken him in. Apologies for not reading the thread properly before.x
