Any fellow Beagle owners?

We have a nearly six month old Beagle, Pippa.

Haven't come across many Beagles IRL so wondered if there are any here who want to chat and share anecdotes of nutty Beags behaviour! 🙂

Pippa is just coming into her teenage phase so we are facing a whole load of new challenges!

Photo for cuteness!

Any fellow Beagle owners?

Hello! We have a beagle. He's three in a couple of weeks.

This is Archie.

Any fellow Beagle owners?

Hey! What a great photo! 😍

I read they start to settle down about 3 years old. How are you finding that?!

He's a lot calmer than he was Grin

He was neutered at 18 months - not sure if that helped but we did notice a difference, but he's noticeably calmer now than he was at the start of the year!

He does have quite bad separation anxiety but comes to work with me so not really an issue. Food obsessed and loves to howl Grin

lionpaws · 02/02/2021 15:46

That's good to hear. We're definitely planning on staying at the right time.

I think separation anxiety can be hard for beagles. They just love us so much! Lockdown etc doesn't help, I don't think we've left on her own more than twice since we got her. I am a sahm so it's not really an issue for us either but would be good to have the option 😅 Going to see a doggy day care on Friday for somewhere she can go if we want to go out for the day or have appointments etc.

I've literally just ordered a slow feeder bowl as her dinner lasts about 30 seconds in a normal bowl! Such a gannet!

What are his favourite chews? I've recently tried the yak milk chews which have been brilliant!

We're really lucky that he can go to my in-laws if I can't take him to work. I'm a dog walker so most days he comes with me on a couple of walks, then goes to his grandparents who spoil him rotten Grin

He eats pretty much anything (typical beagle!) but his favourites are probably stuffed cows feet, pigs ears, yak chews and pizzle sticks. He's very lucky though as I sell treats alongside my dog walking business so he gets to sample everything first!

lionpaws · 03/02/2021 09:26

What a lucky pooch!! I think I need to try filled hooves. We had some puzzles but they don't last long and I really don't like the smell!!

Most of our walk was on lead this morning. 😔 As soon as she sees another dog or person, she's off. Even if they're all the way across the field. And she's really hard to get back. She's so excitable and playful, it's a bit embarrassing sometimes, especially if the other dog doesn't want the attention 🙈

I had a beagle for 13 years, we lost him a couple of years ago but he was just the best dog!! You guys are in for many years of beautiful companionship!

vagmons · 14/03/2021 14:06

We have a 10 month old beagle, she’s wonderful. Quite naughty but just so lovable and loving.

SilentShadows · 15/03/2021 20:21

Love the pictures. I have a two year old girl. Her recall is excellent until she sees another dog she wants to play with - then she's off!

She's the most affectionate dog I've ever owned.

She's a real chewer though. I've finally convinced her that the furniture is not for chewing and that's what her toys are for, but she has a real determination to destroy everything!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 16/03/2021 08:21

@SilentShadows have you tried her on natural chews?

Mine was awful when he was younger but he now has natural chews available all the time and it's pretty much stopped all other chewing behaviours.

vagmons · 18/03/2021 09:43

We are really struggling with two things:

(1) her 'nipping' and 'mouthing' when she's being affectionate and/or playing - especially with my 8 year old. It isn't aggressive but it can be really intense when other people are around and they want to stoke and she wants to be stroked but also wants their hands in her mouth (we aren't in the UK so can socialise with others).

(2) her energy goes off the charts when we have other people around. she feeds off other people. trying to keep her calm is quite hard (I now put her on the lead when she gets totally crazy).

Does anyone have this or has had this with their young beagle (she's 10 months)?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 18/03/2021 14:42

Hi @vagmons :)

Beagles are generally quite a mouthy breed in my experience. What do you do at the moment when she mouthes/nips to stop her?

Yes, they can be very excitable - mine went on the lead when he was getting silly and he eventually learned that if he wanted free rein with guests, he needed to be calm. Any excitable behaviour and he went on his lead or in time out behind a baby gate.

It does get easier. I found the teenage years to be really, really tough but it gets much easier at around two, and again around three (in my experience, anyway).

vagmons · 18/03/2021 14:59

@sunflowersandbuttercups thank you, that’s reassuring!

When we is ‘mouthy’ we go into statute mode (make a fist with our hands and stay still). Although struggling to enforce this with our 8 year old...any other tips welcome!

I will keep using the lead. It does seem to help. Especially when it’s me (she responds much better to me than my husband, much to his annoyance!)

sunflowersandbuttercups · 18/03/2021 15:07

Have you tried crossing your arms and turning your back so you're not giving her any attention or eye contact? That's the only thing that worked for ours!

Mine listens to me more than DH as well, he hates it Grin I think they definitely have a favourite person!

vagmons · 18/03/2021 16:17

Mine hates it too! Haha.

I will try that - thank you.

She does bring a huge amount of joy!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 18/03/2021 16:43

I reckon they're cute because of how frustrating they can be Grin

momonpurpose · 12/12/2021 04:16

Ours is 6 and he's such a good boy. Loyal to a fault and loves to cuddle. But he will snatch your plate off the table if you turn your back

GiantHaystacks2021 · 12/12/2021 04:41

Cute but hard to train.
No recall.
Bin divers. You can't fill a beagle and they will never know when to stop eating.
Hard work.

I would disagree with pretty much all of that. They're fantastic little hounds with excellent personalities, but they are not bred to work alongside people (like labs and spaniels) and too many people ignore that and then wonder why their beagle doesn't listen to them

Are they cute? Yes - very. And I think this can be part of the problem.
Hard work? Hmm - no, not really - you just need to put the work in and have a good read up on scent hounds and what they're bred to do before taking the plunge.
Bin divers? Yes - so you manage their environment and lock the bin away.
Greedy? Yes - but most dogs will eat what they're given - it's down to the humans to manage their environment and diets.
No recall? Well, this depends - mine goes off lead and is generally very good but at the end of the day he's a scent hound and they are bred to chase, so I'm not daft enough to let him off lead in the woods or during mating season

I've name changed since I last posted on this thread btw, I was @sunflowersandbuttercups.

I would however say that they're not a good breed for everyone and you need a lot of patience!

Motorina · 12/12/2021 13:05

I have three. They are all monstrous twats but I love them anyway Grin
