My lovely BTerrier 9 has had diarrhoea for 4 weeks. He seems fine in himself and has had promax, 2xantibiotics 2xsteroids. But today has had bloody poo again. Will take him back tomorrow but I’m worried about him

Have you tried an exclusion diet? I had the same thing with my puppy at around 3 months. Horrible bloody poo and vet ruled out works/other illness. No longer happens now she is grain free and chicken free.

He is grain free and only has sensitive gut food. We gave him rice and white fish... he wasn’t impressed

My dog had this for a couple of weeks. Not sure what triggered it but we had to keep a close eye on him (he has a tenancy to steal anything that falls or is left on the table. We cut out treats and stuck only to his food.

Is thir any chance it could be something in his water. Has there been works near your house recently? Does he go into rivers or streams etc on walks?

Has he been wormed recently?

Hi Queen,

I am a vet. Does the 9 mean that he is 9 years old? If the diarrhoea isn’t responding to symptomatic treatment, he may need further investigation. Many problems can cause diarrhoea as a symptom. I would be considering a full blood screen, and faecal analysis (of samples from 3 consecutive days, as some parasites are shed intermittently).

Be aware though that these tests could all come back within normal limits, and further tests may be needed to narrow down the problem.

Hi He is 9 years old. He does drink puddles when left to his own devices

His diarrhoea did stop and has come back.

He is fine in himself but I am worried about him. He is my pal

Could he have developed an allergy to a food? Allergies don’t always start in puppyhood.
Are you by any chance giving him the chicken & rice often recommended? One of mine can’t tolerate chicken at all.
But she has IBD. Till it was properly diagnosed she had constant diarrhoea & numerous courses of antibiotics to no avail. She’s tiny & cant afford to lose the weight that drops off her. She’s been , for years now, on permanent meds for it after being correctly diagnosed instead of the constant antibiotic courses. It keeps it under control except for occasional little flare ups when Promax usually sorts it out.
Till you can get to the vet make sure he’s drinking enough.
